Regarded as one of the most picturesque courses in Wales with the magnificent backdrop of Historic Gwrych Castle, Abergele Golf Club remains a firm favourite with both members and those who choose to visit from all over the golfing world. The delightful 18 hole Parkland Course boasts many enviable features. The course was established in its present position in 1968 to the historic grounds of Gwyrch Castle with magnificent coastal views. Abergele Golf Club has maintained its reputation by ensuring that innovative enhancements are made at every opportunity. This is clearly highlighted by the completion of a huge project which saw construction of new greens to the latest USGA standards by course architect David Williams of Golf Design and reconstruction work supervised by G. Shiels & Associates.

    Wednesday, 29th April 2015

Day 1 of the 2015 Bunkers Golf Society Annual Invitational was held at Abergele Golf Club on Sunday 15th March 2015.

We arrived at the club to be greeted by friendly member staff who was very welcoming and led us into a bar area with snooker tables to wait whilst our full Welsh breakfast was cooked - which was splendid by the way!

The clubhouse was large and impressive with all the staff found to be friendly and amiable. The club professional was host to a well stocked shop and gave gave us an overview of the course prior to play and was courteous and helpful.

The practice facilities of the club were excellent consisting of a large putting green, an indoor warm up area with two netted driving bays and a short walk from the first tee was there is an all weather short game area to enable players to hone their pitching work pre round.

The club is situated on the side of the hill which provides superb panoramic views out towards the Irish sea, with the added Beauty of Gwynch Castle as a backdrop.

Considering it was mid-March the course was in fantastic condition, with well presented fairways that were soft and springy under foot. If players were unlucky enough to find themselves in the rough it was kept short enough that was not too punishing. However what was clear was this course could present an entirely different prospect in the summer months when the trees and bushes were in full bloom and the fairways would become tighter and more imposing.

The greens were receptive to approach shots and were in reasonable condition throughout given the time of year. There were very subtle reads required on most of them which I have no doubt would make this course even more of a challenge in the summer months when the greens are at their very best.
However there were several greens that had been recently hollow tined or top dressed that were little inconsistent for speed and roll - but this is entirely acceptable at this time of the season. Several of the bunkers were found to be low on decent sand and made escaping them quite difficult. The tea boxes were well-defined, flat and presented no problems throughout.

The highlight of this course would have to be the final two holes. The 17th being a tough uphill par three hitting directly towards the castle. The steep incline meaning that the surface of the green is not visible from the tee and therefore judgement of club is paramount. The 18th hole is the finest on the course as it meanders through the Parkland with out of bounds to the right and at dual fairway presenting difficulties to club choices from the tee. A Water hazard prior to the elevated green makes laying up a tricky prospect but for those brave enough to attempt to reach in two, the rewards could be great but the risk is certainly high.

Several of the earlier holes on the course could be described as nondescript and are up and down in appearance and play. however I must say that there is a strong possibility that during the summer months when the trees are blossomed that these holes may look distinctly different. One criticism of the course is that there are some confusing layouts and walks from tee to green as holes overlap each other and are not overly well signposted.

On the whole this is a pleasant golf course to play and it will provide a reasonable test for most amateur golfers. However, it is not one of the more difficult course we have played. We would certainly visit the course again if only to enjoy the wonderful views and warm hospitality.

Played this course on a lovely evening and thoroughly enjoyed the course. Greens in excellent condition in line with the rest of the course, and must mention the tees which were also of a very high standard. Favourite hole was the 18th which required a good drive and for me a lay up and pitch onto the green. Also particularly liked the 9th, 10 th & 11th all of which require good drives. Never went in a single bunker which is a miracle for me so will definitely play here again! This parkland course is a good fair test of your golf game and I will certainly play it again, definitely one to play if you are in North Wales.

Played here towards the end of March as part of a trip. Considering the weather that we had had a few days prior, the course was in good condition, the fairways were good, the greens were good and at a good speed. The ruff was a little wet and boggy underfoot but your not supposed to go in that anyway. All in all its a really good venue and i would 100% visit again.

Played here towards the end of March. Prior to playing the area had suffered some horrendous weather. Despite this the course was in good condition still on winter rules. Most tees in play and all greens in play. Very good for this time of year

Played Abergele for the third year running as part of our societies North Wales trip.
I like the course, parts of it are a little bit up and down but the castle provides a nice backdrop and if the wind gets up it is a tough test.
The greens weren't brilliant but the weather had been atrocious but the ground underfoot was pretty dry.
The 18th is probably the standout hole but unfortunately that was shortened due to health and safety of all things.
If I lived locally it would definitely a course I would visit regularly as the title says, it's a good local club.

I visited as part of Bunkers Golf Society for our annual invitational competition.

After weeks of shocking weather [and lots of courses back in Merseyside being closed] we were extremely nervous of our visit - but we need not have been. All greens were open and played well. The fairways were lush and a pleasure play from and I think we went off 3/4 mats during the round [for par 3's] which was absolutely no issue.

The club is always supremely welcoming and the value is second to none.We have been visiting for 3/4 years now and each year the quality remains at a very high standard.

The course layout leaves enough of a challenge to be competitive, but not too tricky that it punishes everyone. There are some lovely views and picturesque holes and its a true parkland gem of a course.

Thanks to Abergele GC, once again, for the warm welcome and fabulously maintained course.
Definitely a course to visit in the North Wales region.

Played as day one of a three day event with Bunkers golf society. We had experienced a considerable amount of rain in the days leading up to our visit and the course was surprisingly dry underfoot and the greens were reasonable taking into account the weather.

The layout of the course is varied and offers a fair challenge without being to punishing.

Clubhouse and proshop very friendly, would like to return in the summer months.

Played on November 13th, we got a lovely warm welcome from the people in the pro shop. The course is not to long but you have to think your way around this tight course. There are a few well placed bunkers to catch players using a driver when really an iron is the club. Greens ran fast and true and all the bunkers were raked. Had a great day and we cant wait to return in the summer. Watch out for the 18th its a card wrecker as i found out lol.

Played this as the final course on a golf trip to North Wales. Nice parkland course.

Had previously played it and was pleasantly surprised by the improvement since the last time. Course was in excellent condition and the greens were true if a little slow. It rained heavily for half the round but the course coped without any problems.

Club house was nice and the Pro was helpful. Service at the bar was a little slow, but the food was good.

This is the 2nd year I have visited Abergele GC as part of Bunkers Golf Society and again I was impressed with the place.

The clubhouse is spacious and well presented and everyone inside is friendly. The full 'welsh breakfast' went down a treat and set us up for the days golf and the whole visit offered superb value.

The course was in good order - especially considering the poor winter we have experienced. I didn't see many issues with standing water or worn patches of land. In fact, it was quite the opposite and played well - which is a sign of the good drainage they enjoy.

The greens were a little long and bobbly, but I can understand and accept this with it being winter golf and the club has to ensure the greens are protected for the season.

Bunkers were a bit hit and miss, with a few being GUR and a few being rock hard. However, again, this is the joy of winter golf and I am sure the course would have this resolved from April onwards.

All in all, another great visit to Abergele and I would be happy to recommend it to other golfers as a place to visit in the area.

I visited with Bunkers Golf Society and was greeted by a warm welcome by the staff and we enjoyed a full "Welsh" breakfast before we set out to tee off.

The course was in excellent condition considering the horrendous amounts of rainfall in the area in the preceding months. The greens were smooth and true and the fairways nicely defined.

Unfortunately, i found the course to be a bit "up and down" in places with several of the holes being so similar you find yourself wondering if you have already played the hole whilst standing on the teebox. One really notable exception to this is the superb 18th hole (unfortunately, this was playing at half it`s usual length during our visit due to the unprecedented levels or rain the course had endured) which offers stunning views and is a finishing hole any course would be proud of.

Day 1 of 3 of the Bunkers Invitational started at Abergele. Club pro very welcoming offering advice and updates on the condition of the course. Temporary tee on the superb 18th was the only negative. Very nice clubhouse 24 lads congregated upstairs in the snooker room awaiting a very tasty Welsh breakfast. Chef very friendly and accommodated the fussy eaters !!
Large putting area prior to the first hole with indoor nets to help you warm up !
The course itself was in good condition despite the horrendous amounts of rain in recent weeks.
Greens where in good condition and will only improve with the better weather. Credit to green keeper for keeping them as good as they where !
Nice course with some great views of the castle and looking out to the Irish sea ! Would recommend this course. I play off 19.

What a good course. Reading some of the reviews beforehand made me think, aside from 17/18 that it was s bit of a flat track but that does it a little disservice as the holes are quite clever with a few dog legs along the way and strategic bunkers. It looks tight from some tees but actually most fairways are quite forgiving and wide, and if you get a decent tee shot away it's game on! But the best part of the course are the greens. Very quick and if you get on the wrong side of the hole, it was prayer time. If memory serves me right (and I only played two hours ago so it should!!) all the greens had slopes and were very tricky. The club could have some good fun if the pins were in certain places! As with most other reviews you'll read, 17 and 18 are good finishing holes so look out for them. All in all a good course and well worth a visit if not to tick it off the list.

Beautiful course, well presented and in immaculate condition,a credit to the greens staff. Pleasant staff in shop and locker room facilities very good. Excellent clubhouse with very good catering and again pleasant staff.Opening hole easy par four if kept straight off the tee as trouble left and right with trees. Next fifteen holes a good test of tight par fours, long and short par threes with the odd par five thrown in for good measure. The final two holes are a really good test....the 17th an uphill longish par 3 with trouble to the left . My favourite the 18th is an easy reachable par 5 with plenty of trouble en route! One of my favourite courses

This was my first time at Abergele golf club and I was pleasantly surprised.
The clubhouse was nice and the breakfast we had on arrival was lovely and the staff that served it were friendly and efficient. The practice facilities whilst not utilised fully, a mistake in hindsight (haha), were good, and the putting green was a good reflection of the course.
On to the course, it was a lovely 18 holes, some tricky holes and nicely laid out. The greens were good for the time of year and we were playing off full tees which always a big win in my eyes. Was a bit damp but that's to be expected for the time of year. The fairways were fine and all in its a course I would happily play again, especially the 18th hole. Spectacular.

I played this course with Bunkers Golf Society on 15th March 2015. We were greeted to a nice warm welcome and a superb 'welsh breakfast' by courteous and friendly staff.

The course is a moderate walk and has some beautiful views over Abergele and the northern coast. For the time of year, it played well and was in great condition.

We were on full tees and greens and the fairways were well kept and 'springy' underfoot giving confidence for shots into the greens. There were a couple of bare bunkers, but this is usually to be expected in the early part of the season and I would imagine this wouldn't be an issue from April onwards.

The greens were true and had some very subtle breaks on them but were generally in solid condition, with only the odd one or two lagging behind due to the early season growth issues that are commonplace at most clubs. They had been recently top dressed and I will take this into consideration when making this review and it is understandable that courses need to do this work to ensure the course is at its finest, when members and guests would expect it to be so.

The layout is interesting in parts, with the final 2 holes standing out in particular with Gwrych Castle in the background and the holes being cut into the natural undulations of the land. However, there are parts during the course when the holes do feel a little basic and 'up and down' and there lacked much character.

All in all, Abergele was a really pleasant round of golf on a course that is clearly very well looked after and I would visit it again - particularly in the summer months to make a fair comparison.

The pro shop was reasonably well stocked and the professional was friendly and informative.
The practice facilities were very good with a large putting area, a nice all weather pitching ground and two indoor nets to allow warm up in sheltered surroundings.

I played this fantastic parkland course in mid March 2015. I booked 24 lads in at the pro shop and was met with smiling faces and a quick conversation about what to expect from the course. From here we enjoyed a great full 'Welsh' breakfast served with a smile. The room was more than adequate with a great view of the Gwyrch Castle and the challenging 18th finishing hole.
Out to the practising area. I used the putting green and inside nets. Couldn't fault the greens, big enough and in great condition. Practise nets inside a small building, this was a first for me but they did the job and could see these being busy on rainy days. However the weather Gods where shining on us and this made this picturesque course even more pleasurable to play.
The course itself was in great condition well maintained from tee box to green. The greens where smooth and true. Not too punishing on most holes and a great finishing 18th hole that has you thinking after each shot. The veranda on the clubhouse a great place to watch the rest of your groups finishing with a nice crisp coors.
I would recommend this parkland course to anyone who has not played it before and I will be returning.

This course is a real mixed bag and got me arguing with myself when compiling this review. Lets start with the layout. The course is hung off a beautiful hill with Abergele Castle in the backdrop. Whilst the course starts off very well with some pretty holes its not too long before you are playing very similar style holes (probably 6 in all) up and down. Personally i prefer a bit more variety than that.
The condition of the course, bearing in mind its at the bottom of a hill and its still wintery conditions, is very good. Greens are true enough and the fairways are well kept.
If your in the area then its worth a go but i wouldnt travel hours to play here unless you've just purchased a new car that you cant stop driving.

I arrived at Abergele GC with 23 friends - all eagerly anticipating the excitement of three days of competitive team golf. We arrived in good time to enjoy an excellent full cooked breakfast which was served by a very courteous, smiling lady who could not do enough to ensure that our day got off to a great start. We all then moved out onto the practice area and putting green to begin the pre-round banter!
Given the recent low seasonal temperatures and rainfall, the course was in surprisingly good condition with the greens in particularly fine condition. The weather remained chilly but dry for the duration of our round which enabled many to post some very impressive scores. I thoroughly enjoyed my round and would recommend this course to any golfer visiting the region.
