A free draining chalk downland course, rarely closed and ideal for year-round play. Easy walking and set on the slopes of Tichborne Down which provides for picturesque views of the Hampshire countryside. The five tricky par 3s and narrow fairways ensures that the course is always a challenge. Stray too far from the fairway and find that your approach shots to the small and well-guarded greens are a test of distance and accuracy. The course has an ever growing reputation for overall quality and presentation and the greens are slick, true and amongst the best in Hampshire.

So I last played 4 years ago, and have been back to see how some changes have progressed.

The course layout hasn't changed, and some holes do feel a little boring, but well placed bunkers do make you think and little more, and some tricky pins can make quite a difference to the way to play the holes.

Lots of good work on the bunkers has given some great playing conditions. Exact, and precise sand levels means you can have confidence in playing out ... although the grey looking sand is a little uninspiring.

An extensive practise facility exists above the car park, with lots of short game areas and two additional putting and chipping greens.

A great finishing hole (in full view of the clubhouse) can give a good spectacle for visiting groups.

Overall I think my earlier review was harsher than the course merits. I thoroughly enjoyed the course this time and would visit again.

    'Wait for nice day'

Sits on some hillsides and a tour guide would be useful for knowing where to play to as there are many blind tee shots. It's fairly short and I played the whole way with 3 wood off of the tee without being in any trouble. Mid summer the greens are dangerous, bit for me the sand quality was a letdown. A few raised greens is probably the most excitement that this gives though.

Short from any of the tees and from an opening tee shot over the top of the hill you'll know how how the rest of the round is. Not the prettiest course and some very plain holes that are only improved from being blind shots. The last few holes provide a good test but are played blind if the sun is setting.

Club house and pro shop are fine but the putting green is probably more suitable in a seaside setting as the two tier green is just madness.
