Must be the best day out for the price

Played at Ashton In Makerfield for the third year in a row. The Jack Potter Trophy day is fantastic and can not be beaten in my opinion. We are always given a warm welcome and the deal you get for £20 is astonishing. Your entry fee includes entry into the two's as well as the Open with all sorts of prizes up for grabs. Also included in the price is a Carvery which is always excellent. A bottle of water and a Banana or Apple were available on the first tee and on the 10th tee you could have a Pint of Lager, a shot of Whisky, various Fruit and nuts or Crisps all free of charge. The course itself was as usual in excellent condition throughout with all areas in very good condition. The Bunkers had plenty of Sand in and had all been well raked. The Greens were excellent and ran truly at a good fast pace. The course is quite a tough walk and a buggy would be advisable for older players. All in all this was a fantastic day and we will return as long as we are welcome. Thanks again to all concerned at the course and your hard work on presenting the course in such condition is much appreciated.

Returned to play this absolute gem of a course today. This is the third year we , Astoria Golf Society, have have taken part in Jack Potter memorial trophy and again it was an excellent day. The course was immaculate , the club , staff, members and facilities were second to none and finished the day with a carvery meal. Can't wait till next year.

I can't believe a golf course of this quality is only a 15 minute drive from where I live and I only played it for the first time today.
We got a real warm and friendly welcome from the staff in both the pro shop and the club house. The course itself is in immediate condition despite the amount rain we have had recently, as for the green they are some of the best I have played on the year. I highly recommend this course and can't wait to play here again.
Hopefully get our society (the swingers) on there in the very near future

Visited Ashton for the 3rd time today and on each occasion it has impressed me.
Its an interesting layout with multi levels and is designed cleverly on the lay of the land. There are some tricky holes that demand more than brute strength and some of the holes are beautifully enclosed by trees and foliage.

The greens were quick and had some difficult levels on them and breaks were often tough to spot but they were great to play on.
The course was in good condition throughout and my only complaint on todays visit was that a couple of the bunkers were a bit empty and compacted.

The clubhouse was empty when we went in afterwards and the bar was closed and so I can't comment on the off field value but the set up was pleasant.

Well worth a visit.

A great golf course that makes you forget where you are, the M6 motorway running alongside the early holes in the round is well and truly forgotten, instead the interesting opening holes offer the average golfer a pleasant challenge.

A shorter course with only two par 5 holes in the round, but that in no way detracts from the quality of golf on this undulating landscape. Flat lies are a rare find on this course. The tree lined fairways are wide enough for the average golfer to hit, but that isn't to say there are no traps or dangers on the course.

Overall an enjoyable course with a good pro shop, the clubhouse is well kept with good catering. I will be playing this again in the summer.

This golf course amazes me, sandwiched between the M6 & Haydock industrial estate once you arrive in the car park you feel like you are in the open countryside and stay that way until you drive back out. The course is kept in great condition and although relatively short has enough tree lined fairways to provide a solid test of your golfing skills. The newly landscaped 17th is the stand out hole for me. The Pro Peter, and his two assistants John & Richard manage a well stocked shop & couldn't be more helpful, they are always friendly & welcoming, I am left feeling more like a member than a visitor. In the words of Peter Alliss this is my little gem and well worth a visit.

Played here as part of a society day, loads of space in the clubhouse enough for us to have our own room even with 20+ of us.
It was a very windy day we played this course making the tough holes even tougher into the wind! Overall the course was in good condition just a little boggy and wet in some places, i would suggest playing prefferred lies through the green in these conditions as one shot i hit landed just over a green and after a couple of minutes looking it was found 3 inches into the ground. I must say the greens were among the best ive played this year, tidy clean, quick, very consistant which is something you usually dont get this time of year. Really impressive, i would like to play this again in the summer for sure. The only liitle thing that was abit wierd was if you use a gps watch as i did, im guessing they have changed the course around a little bit as i think when we got to the 12 it was showing a completely different hole! All fairways and greens were in play which is testament to the green-staff although it was winter tee mats but you can live with that.
