Bolton Golf Club is set high on the hillside literally minutes from the Town centre with panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Teeuplo arrived on what was to be a very pleasant day, sun shining and no wind made it the perfect day for golf and conditions that meant the course would be less tough on us than we might expect when the winds blow on this elevated course position. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly pro shop, Bolton has some excellent practice facilities for both long and short game drills along with a state of the art indoor coaching facility that offers up coaching from the Club's professional,Ian Orrell.

Following a quick warm up on the putting green that sits adjacent to the first tee we set about the course that was due to host the 2015 Lancashire Amateur Championships in the weeks ahead.

The first hole is a gentle warm up, a par 4 of less than 300yds that is very straightforward, I choose to play an iron from the tee and left a short pitch to the green, although not the most inspiring start to the round the first does give you a taste of the fabulous greens at Bolton, they had fantastic pace and a perfect role.

The 2nd is a lot more interesting, dogleg right to left par 4 that plays up hill all the way, bunkers located on the elbow of the dogleg and a camber that takes you away from the hole and towards the awaiting tree line mean the second is an all together different prospect and its time to switch on.

The 3rd hole offers up something which you will experience on many holes throughout the 18, a fairly severe slope on fairways which means your tee shots have to be sent towards one side of the fairway to come to rest on the opposite, a feature that would suggest course knowledge is key to a successful round at Bolton.

Hole 5 was a favourite of mine, another par 4 this time stroke index 3, a good drive down the left side of the fairway should mean the ball will finish centre/right of centre but still require a precise iron shot to this well guarded green.

The 7th is a hole you will either love or hate and that probably depends on how well you play it! Course knowledge is once again essential as club choice from the tee on this severe right to leg dogleg is paramount to land in a position to play fro the green in 2, a green that is very well guarded and I can only imagine how many 'medal' cards are scuppered at this point.

Hole 9 is probably my favourite on this track, par 4 stroke index 1 plays uphill from tee to green and will certainly test your accuracy all the way. If you do muster a good tee shot you will still be left with a long second into a very tight green entrance that will punish anything other than straight, be warned!

The 10th tee position is at the highest part of the course and provides a great vantage point with views that stretch for miles. It is a par 3 that bears down onto a green surrounded by bunkers and with such elevation on the tee it is another where club selection is key.
On the day we played the tee box for the 13th was in a very strange position which meant we played across a fairway and over a tree line to reach the fairway, it was very poorly sign posted and we had to wait for instruction from members who were leaving the first green. Needless to say I lost my ball from the tee shot as I literally had no idea of direction or club choice, from the correct tee position I would think this is a nice little hole with a very pretty pond hugging the left fairway.

The back nine seems to offer up a number of tee shots that require you to aim a long way from your desired finish position, something which with the fairways bounding as they did would require not only accuracy but also an element of luck for your ball to come to rest in a suitable place. I have to say this was something which became a little frustrating.

Bolton Golf Club was to be found in excellent condition, greens were very good, fairways, fringes, first and second cuts were all immaculate. The layout of the course is varied but I did struggle with the amount of slope on some fairways. It is not an easy walk either, I carried and would not recommend, many of the older members I saw playing on the day were in buggies which is understandable, but a trolley is definitely order of the day.

I played here with Bunkers Golf society on 14th October 2018 and play off 9hcp.

Bolton is a lovely layout and no doubt it is a great course. However, just through pure chance, I have played it twice now in or after poor weather and towards the beginning or end of the golfing season. Thats not a fair way to review the course as I'm obviously never going to see anywhere in its prime.

That being said, I have to review it honestly based on my visit. The greens were slow and hollow tined [nothing can be done about this in October] but I can see that they are well cared for and would be lovely in the prime months.

The course is interesting and is a great mixture of holes to suit all styles and abilities of golfer. I would recommend a visit to anyone in the area and the club are very warm and welcoming of guests and societies. Get down there and see for yourself.

Bolton was a club we last visited in 2016 and we were unlucky enough to catch it on a horrendous day of heavy rain and strong winds. Despite this, members could see the potential in the course and we had been wanting to return as a group again to cast our eyes over it in better conditions. However, the UK weather being.....well, just that, meant that we came the day after yet another storm and despite being warned for heavy rain we were lucky enough to avoid the worst of it.

The course is quite a hilly track with the majority of the course being played with the ball above or below your feet - depending on which way you are heading. This proves a good test of golf as you need to adjust your game accordingly. However, it should be noted that its a fair walk for anyone of poorer mobility.

The greens had been hollow tined a week or two prior to our visit - so once again, we couldn't see them in their absolute prime [they are hand cut to STRi guidance in the summer months] but we accepted this may be the case when we booked to play in mid October. That being said, you could see the quality of the greens and drainage was superb given the heavy downpour the night before - they just rolled a little uneven and much slower that we suspect they would do a couple of months earlier.

The tee boxes were all flat and well tendered and the bunkers for the most part were well stocked with only the odd couple being a bit compacted and clay-like due to the rainfall.

The course itself is a lovely layout of 18 holes - none of which appear to be similar - which is always nice. There are holes that suit the bigger hitters but the majority of the course is designed to reward accuracy off the tee and game management. Its well kept and maintained and is a pleasure on the eye.

The day cost us £30 for golf only at 11am on a Sunday morning - which we thought was fair value without being exceptional and the food in the clubhouse that we paid for additionally was tasty, plentiful and served by attentive and pleasant staff.

All in all, Bolton Golf Club is somewhere we would like to return to once again - and hopefully, next time, in the middle of the summer on a gloriously sunny day [here's hoping!]

Great course layout with different shaped holes, (shame only 1 par 5) blind tees and some fairways on slopes means you need to think your way around rather than just whack driver off every tee. Course is decent condition considering awful weather few days prior and on morning of play, no real soggy patches or standing water.

Only let down was the greens. They had recently been hollow tined, but not all holes filled and grass was very long meaning putts where very bobbly and greens unreasonablely slow.

Would like to revisit in summer months when greens in better condition.

Our last event of the year held at Bolton Golf Club... great club set up in the hills. Great layout with some tough holes. Enjoyed playing the course, it was unfortunate that recently the greens had aeriation holes applied so putting was somewhat tricky. Would love to play the course in the summer months. Great value and well worth a try.

Played this course as our final major of the year with swingers golf society, unfortunately we picked a terrible day weather wise with torrential rain all day, regardless we still had a fantastic day. Really liked the lay out of the course with some picturesque views of the surrounding areas. The greens were very wet but still fantastic and would be great in dry weather. The staff were brilliant and looked after us from start to finish, even going as far as to make ya some custom closest the pin markers with our logo on which was a really lovely touch and much appreciated. Would highly recommend this course far any society looking for a great deal or even anyone looking for a friendly knock

A fantastic and friendly environment to play golf in. The guys in the clubhouse could not do enough for us.
Course was immaculate and greens pure, fast and true. The weather made the day a challenge for the "swingers" golf society`s final major of the year. Throughly enjoyed the course and all it challenges. Hats off to he green staff and the pro who was extremely helpful.

Had our last major of the year here 26/8/18 and unfortunately the the rain was torrential from start to finish so it’s hard to judge the course based on the conditions! However the welcome and hospitality we received was second to none. You could tell the course was well maintained and even with all the rain you could see if dry, they where great greens! We will be returning next year to play it hopefully in the dry!

We had our last major of the year here and it was just a shame the weather let us down. We had heard great stuff about the course going into it but tough to appreciate it when your getting soaked.
Aside from the weather you can tell the course and layout is lovely, some really testing holes and greens even with the downpour the greens was a lot better condition than I expected.
Team at Bolton Golf Club was fantastic with us an offered a warm welcome and really professional outfit putting our nearest the pin & longest drive with our logos out on the course.
We have booked to be back next year for our major and fingers crossed the weather plays it’s part because we know Bolton is a fantastic course

    Played Sunday 26th August

The weather is only factor that i could not give this course what it deserves, as most of the greens held water which is due to the down pour through the night and the rain not stopping when arrived. But with that said it was our last major of the year and that would not stop 21 lads from turning up and giving it there all. Speaking with the members afterwards all will be wanting to play here again, this is a great little course with some great holes with the perfect back drop for a great picture. With a few holes a challenge hitting and making the right tee shot is key for your next shot into the greens. The staff are very welcoming and made the day a lot better with there fantastic service, and even making our very own personalized nearest pin and longest drive markers which was a touch of class.

Played this course with the swingers unfortunately can’t give it full marks as the weather was horrendous so I couldn’t really tell if the green were good or not, but the hospitality and facilities were spot on, to be fair just to get the golf course even playable was a mirical it was that wet, I played rubbish again and came about 12 out of 21 players but still had an enjoyable experience, thanks again Will for sure be back and let’s hope the weather is batter. The main guy in the club house looking after us couldn’t do enough for us so a special thanks to him.

Unfortunately we had the weather against on our visit with strong winds an constant rain for the whole 18 holes. The fairways had held up fine but the greens however held a lot of the water which was only to be expected. The few greens that never held any water where in great condition though. Thought the course layout was really good though an a course that I will be revisiting again in better conditions hopefully.

Played this coarse (Bolton) at the weekend, 11th June 2017 for the first time in a few years and it was in very good condition. All the tees were in great condition, the fairways were in pristine condition and the greens were in excellent condition but in my opinion could have benefited from a slight cut, don't get me wrong the ball ran well and held the line and borrow they just looked slightly long so took you a few holes to get used to the speed, looked slow but we're fast, this may have been the plan of the green keepers as it was their open so don't let it put you off at all.
As I said it was the coarse open and I played it as part of a society, we were made to feel very welcome by everyone we spoke to from the the working people to the members that we met.

Played Bolton in an Open event on Sunday 11th June 2017. We were given a very warm welcome on our return to Bolton, in both the pro shop and the bar area. Food was excellent. The course itself was in great condition, especially when you consider the amount of rain that has been around. All areas were cut and striped up nicely. the Bunkers had plenty of sand in and had been raked. The Greens were running quite fast and had a nice even roll. They are very difficult to read and some break the opposite way to what it would seem. The course is a fairly easy walk but has some up and down parts. All in all it was another great day out and we will definitely be returning.

Played here with bunkers golf society on 24/4/16.

Upon arriving onto the golf course you can see what kind of set up there is with an excellent warm up facility with a short pitching area and longer with the use of a longer driving bay aswel.
We had chosen to have a full english before we went out which went down a treat for all members and the service received by the members of staff was excellent. As we got there the weather was starting to turn for the worse and it didnt stop raining for the whole round, however this was still an enjoyable round. It was my first visit to this golf course and it showed with constant errors off the tee were you think the fairway goes to actually were it is. The courses biggest defense is its layout and greens the course does not need the 'big stick' every hole but to put it in play and leave a full shot in.
I would definitely want to visit this course again and see the point difference when its not as wet.

After enjoying an outstanding full English breakfast - served in our own private dining room - players made their way to the excellent putting green and chipping areas to prepare for their first round on a course regarded by many as one of the best layouts in Lancashire. Unfortunately the outstanding views we hoped to enjoy of Winter Hill, South Lancashire and the Cheshire plains were somewhat obscured by the torrential rain and sleet which beat down on our group for most of the afternoon!
Despite the challenging conditions there were plenty of good scores though on what was judged by all to be a great day out at a course which all agreed would be nice to return to when conditions were a little more pleasant.

Bolton Golf Club has been at its present location Lostock Park on the north western side of Bolton since 1912. The golf course commands panoramic views over the South Lancashire and Cheshire plains and enjoys an enviable reputation for its well manicured layout with fast and consistently smooth putting surfaces.
I love all the practice facilities it has to offer I felt like a PGA the professional golfer warming up there.
Amazing course and very well kept. Challenging, and scenic the 3 par are challenging with some sneaky bunkers place pacifically around the green protector to the pin.
I played the course with the bunkers Golf Society, excellent value for money. I played the course extremely well, with my lowest score of the year nett 77 and stable ford points 42.... You don't need to be a big hitter off the tee, need to be disciplined and have very consistent course management.
Looking forward to playing this course again on the dry sunny day, not the rain. lol
If you want to play this course. I would recommend the use of electric trolley or hire out the golf buggy as the course is extremely hilly.

I visited Bolton GC as part of Bunkers Golf Society on 24/04/16.

Like most people, I am probably guilty of playing Parkland courses all too often and this highlights my weaknesses when playing undulating courses that present me with various lies (above and below feet)

Bolton is situated on the side of a hill and the course - although exhausting as a walk - certainly does make use of the natural landscape. There are some really interesting holes with good use of natural valleys and water features and the course requires accuracy and a good golfing brain rather than brute force.

The greens - like all clubs in early 2016 - were slightly behind where they probably should be, due to the record breaking wet winter but they still rolled better than most courses I've played this year.

Bunkers were mostly well stocked and nice to play from, with only the heavy rain during play compacting some of the sand. (But nothing the club can do about that)

The aesthetics of the course are lovely with well manicured fairways and tee boxes and the practice areas are as good as anywhere I've visited locally.

The warm welcome at the club was delightful and we were served a sumptuous full breakfast in our own dining area with all the lads sat around one huge table - a great way to start the day.

It did rain heavily and persistently for our entire round but the course stood up well and didn't spoil the enjoyment of it.

All in all, it's a great local club that should be visited by all. I've overlooked it in the past - as I didn't really realise it was there!!! But now I've found it, I will be going back!

Second time I`ve played Bolton and even though it rained for much of the day, the course held up really well. This course has bit of everything. The testing 9th is a Par 4 that plays its full length of over 400 yds uphill - contrast that with the problematic Par 3 10th which only played 131 yds from an elevated Tee and yet only one of our 4 ball managed to hit the green! Well bunkered course with good quality sand in them. Message to self "never try to put out of a bunker again". Thank you Bolton GC great day out.
