Childwall ranks with the very best of courses in this area of very fine Golf Clubs. The course design was based on the recommendation of James Braid and has, over the years, undergone some alterations, mainly to increase the length. Childwall Golf Club is a very tough test of Golf and can match any course. The course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk.

The Clubhouse is extremely attractive, serves excellent food and has a friendly, hospitable atmosphere. It was designed by Alderman Shennan and it should not surprise anyone that he was also responsible for the Royal Birkdale Clubhouse.

The course itself is tucked away a few miles from Childwall and would fall more under Gateacre or Netherley. Its easily accessible from the M57 & M62 motorways with just a five minute drive from both. As you enter the club from the main road, it certainly isn't what you would expect from a club in this built up area of Liverpool with a large clubhouse that has an art-deco design to it, and is not too dissimilar to Royal Birkdale in appearance. The pro shop was quite large and well stocked and the professional was very friendly, talkative and helpful and immediately gave a great impression of the club. On entering the impressive clubhouse, you can tell there is a lot of history to this club and despite the tradition there was a nice relaxed feeling in the bar area. We were seated for soup and sandwiches in a separate room upstairs, overlooking the course. Although the food wasn't difficult, it was well cook and presented and was served by several members of staff who were all chatty and helpful. The views over the mature parkland course were superb and everyone commented on how beautiful it looked - which only built up our anticipation of the days play. We made our way to the large putting green to warm up and although it isn't a totally accurate reflection of the pace and quality of the greens, it was fair. It was also large enough to cater for all 22 players at once [which I think may be a first for this season] There were also a couple of nets to warm up the longer clubs and there was an impressive practice ground and pitching/chipping green. All in all, a very good level of practise/warm up facilities. The first tee allowed for the entire group to gather around and put pressure on each other, which is always a nice thing in society outings. The course was superbly manicured, especially for a parkland track at this autumnal time of year. Yes, there were lots of leaves that had fallen from trees but I cannot recall anyone complaining that it caused them to loose a ball, and this is a good reflection of the fact that the club must keep on top of this to a degree. The fairways were like carpet and were firm [considering the heavy rain before our visit] and springy. There were two obvious cuts of rough and the definition between the fairway and the longer grass was beautifully kept. The tee boxes were all pretty flat on the whole with no major issues. The tee markers were the full width of the tee box which although unusual, did give players great food for thought with tee positions and also made the boxes more presentable as there was less obvious wear marks on them. The greens had recently been hollowtined which although a complete pain, is an understandable part of the golfing season in the UK. Despite this, they actually player pretty fair and although there were a few nasty bobbles, they were firm, dry and consistent. They were also very quick considering and it was obvious that in the summer months they would be a real dream to play on. The bunkers were mostly well kept and raked and had sufficient sand in them. The only compacted and hard bunkers were the ones early in the fairways that would not offer much of a problem unless players had a nightmare tee shot [in which case, you deserve the tougher lies!] The 7th green was a temp as it had been ripped up for some major renovation work. This was explained to us before play and we appreciated that courses have to make these improvements to make the course better in future. It wasn't ideal, but it was totally understandable and no complaints from us. Afterwards, we enjoyed a few beers in the bar and we had one member who bagged a hole-in-one and bought the group a drink each. I think we ordered 19/20 drinks and the total came to around 55 which is extremely competitive. Had he have holed that shot on a hotel complex, the round would have been 3 times as much I am sure. All in all, Childwall Golf Club impressed us all. It was friendly, well priced for the quality it provided and is definitely somewhere we will try to go back to in future years. The only issue raised from the whole day was the lack of ability to pay using bank cards at the bar [or indeed to the club directly, as we had to pay the deposit and balance in cash/cheque]. This is very unusual in the modern electronic age where a lot of people rarely carry cash and pay for things using their debit cards. Not the end of the world, but maybe something to consider. However, the club and course has everything else you would possibly want from a parkland course and we would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it.

    I play off 16.

I played here in July 2019 with BGS.

The course was immaculately presented. The definition on the fairways leading into the rough were pleasing on the eye.

The greens were one of the best I've played this year. The course is always well presented, it's a good test for any golfer and I would recommend any golfer to play here.

I played here with Bunkers golf society.

I have played here a few times before so knew what to expect and that is a very nice course in first class condition. I’ll

It certainly didn’t disappoint. Fabulous greens, beautiful definition through the course and many holes that require some thought make this a course you should play whenever the chance arises.

I visited with Bunkers Golf Society on 14th July 2019 and I play off a handicap of 9.

Childwall GC is a beautiful parkland course that is always immaculately maintained. The greens are playing superb at the moment and were smooth and quick - a true pleasure to play on.

The course is very easy on the eye and holds up to any parkland course in the local area. The clubhouse has a feel of Royal Birkdale to it and has had a renovation since last time I visited which has taken the whole venue up a notch.

We enjoyed 1pm tee times on a Sunday - which was at a fair price and the costs in the club house were good. The welcome is always warm and this was no different.

Childwall is a club I would like to visit on a more regular basis and is one I would have no hesitation in recommending to other golfers.

Childwall GC has always been a course that scores strongly with our members during our end of season reviews and we are always afforded a warm welcome and a course that is immaculately presented with some of the best greens in the area - this visit was no different.

The greens were smooth and slick with subtle undulations that made them a real test to putt on. In addition, the pin positions for the visit were tricky, with several tightly plotted over bunkers leaving little room for error. The course was in beautiful condition with manicured fairways that were in their prime, lovely flat and well cared for tee boxes and bunkers with just the right amount of sand in that - and most were raked and well presented [which can be a sad rarity these days due to member/guest attitudes]

?The clubhouse has been updated since our last visit and is modern, bright and welcoming and the food was pleasant and fairly priced. The weather for our visit was great and so we were able to enjoy a few beers afterwards on the terrace overlooking the 18th Hole and the general consensus amongst the group was that it was another hugely impressive visit to the club.

Once again, we would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Childwall Golf Club to any golfer worth their salt. Its a fabulous parkland course that never fails to disappoint.

Another superb visit to an extremely well maintained golf course. It's always a great day out at Childwall. The course was in great condition, the green were blemish free and were a joy to putt on.
Off the course the Childwall GC and their staff in the clubhouse are amongst the friendliest in the area and welcome you as they would their own members. A proper golf club in great condition, very reasonable green fees too for a Sunday afternoon in July, a must for any societies looking to play in the area.

I re-visited this wonderful course with friends from Bunkers Golf Society on a fine summer’s afternoon. Once again I was hugely impressed with the condition and standard of maintenance of the entire course.
The fairways were smooth and well graded, the bunkers were well sanded and the greens were as good as any I’ve played on in recent years!
The uniquely designed, spacious and very well appointed clubhouse also offers a beautiful terrace upon which we were once again able to enjoy a post round drink selected from an impressive assortment of beers sourced from all over the world.
This is a club and course to which it is always a pleasure to return and I can recommend it to other golfers without reservation!

Year on year this course fails to let us down. The greens, fairways and rough are perfectly presented. The course keeps you interested all the way round with no two hole the same. Probably the best course in the local area.
Newly refurbished bar area is really nice but if your fortunate enough to play when it’s good weather then sit outside and enjoy the view of the course. You’d never think you were bang in the middle of a residential area.

Played here on a bunkers event and with it being a firm favourite with in the society I was looking forward to playing with it being my first time playing here.

The course did not dissapoint, the tee boxes were in great condition the fairways were absolutely immaculate they had plenty of bounce and run in them. There are plenty of well placed fairway bunkers and some greens are extremely well protected giving a stern test. The greens were in their absolute prime running true and fast and finding a struggle to keep the ball on the green on some chip shots and approach shots. The pin positions were in some difficult positions as we came the weekend after the clubs championship weekend.

All in all a fantastic parkland course and would have no issues in visiting again.

Visited here in August 2018 for a society day including food and 27 holes.
The clubhouse is quite impressive and reminds you of Birkdale. Fortunately the prices arent anywhere near those charged in Southport!
The course was in good condition considering the lack of rain over the recent months. We all got plenty of run from the fairways and found the greens true and of good pace.
The facilities also very good with the food being excellent as well as Julie + Ash providing brilliant service throughout the day.

I recently played this wonderful course on our society day out. We had soup and sandwiches before our round, as we have done previously and again the food and staff where excellent. The day before they had cancelled a competition, due to the bad weather. Despite this I found the course in excellent condition. The course was well defined, fairways in good condition and the greens where still quite quick despite the last few days of poor weather. Overall an other excellent day out and i look forward to our next visit. Thank you Childwall Golf Club

I played here as part of Bunkers golf Societies visit.

We were met by friendly staff who served us some nice sandwiches and a bowl of vegetable soup prior to our round.

Then out to the practice putting green which was in excellent condition. Better than many greens we have played on at different courses in all honesty.

The course itself is an excellent parkland golf course with a nice variety of holes, all in pristine condition.
The greens were a pleasure to putt on, offering a nice smooth roll.
The fairways were beautifully defined and the rough offered a punishing lie should you venture off the short grass.

One or two of the bunkers were a bit below the rest of the courses standard but i imagine this is due to the horrendous rain suffered in this area recently.

I'm sure we will be returning as a society to this venue on a regular basis and i'm already looking forward to our next visit which says it all.

Had the pleasure of playing this course on a wet Sunday afternoon. The course was in excellent condition. The tees, fairways and greens where in great condition. There are 85 bunkers on the course. The course is quite flat so not to demanding on the old legs and feet. Its a beautiful parkland course. We had soup and sandwiches on arrival as part of our package, which made it a very good value for our day. The staff and members made us all very welcome. I look forward to visiting again. I played here with Bunkers Golf Society on 26th June 2016.

Childwall is a beautiful parkland set up with tight fairways and penal rough that demands accuracy throughout all areas of play. Its main defences are the numerous bunkers scattered on every hole [I believe there are somewhere in the region of 85+ during the 18 holes] and the second cut of rough, which is thick and dense and tricky to play from – particularly in wet conditions [as we found out]

Despite some bad weather in the build-up to our visit, and on the day itself, the course played magnificently and the greens in particular were an absolute credit to the ground staff. Slick, quick and true rolling throughout – they were a joy to putt on [or 4 putt in one members case!]

The bunkers were stocked well but, understandably in the conditions, were a little compacted in places due to the rain. The tee boxes were all flat, well cared for and a pleasure to play from.

The course itself is kind under foot with it being fairly level and therefore it’s not too punishing a round. There are some beautiful holes and the course was in immaculate condition for our visit with well-defined cuts between the fairway and two cuts of rough. The fairways were soft and springy underfoot and were a joy to play off and the course generally was excellently maintained with minimal pitch marks and divots.

The cost of the day’s golf [including soup and sandwiches] was very competitive and the prices in the bar afterwards were reasonable. The staff are always extremely friendly at Childwall, right from the point of organising through the admin office in the build-up to our day’s play, to the bar/catering and pro shop staff.

In summary, Childwall is a club that I would recommend to any golfing society. It offers wonderful facilities, at a competitive price in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The clubhouse may seem a little traditional, but I have absolutely no issue with this and I have not found it to be ‘snooty’ like some similar places can sometimes feel. A wonderful club that offers everything a keen golfer would demand.
