Childwall ranks with the very best of courses in this area of very fine Golf Clubs. The course design was based on the recommendation of James Braid and has, over the years, undergone some alterations, mainly to increase the length. Childwall Golf Club is a very tough test of Golf and can match any course. The course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk.

The Clubhouse is extremely attractive, serves excellent food and has a friendly, hospitable atmosphere. It was designed by Alderman Shennan and it should not surprise anyone that he was also responsible for the Royal Birkdale Clubhouse.

The course itself is tucked away a few miles from Childwall and would fall more under Gateacre or Netherley. Its easily accessible from the M57 & M62 motorways with just a five minute drive from both. As you enter the club from the main road, it certainly isn't what you would expect from a club in this built up area of Liverpool with a large clubhouse that has an art-deco design to it, and is not too dissimilar to Royal Birkdale in appearance. The pro shop was quite large and well stocked and the professional was very friendly, talkative and helpful and immediately gave a great impression of the club. On entering the impressive clubhouse, you can tell there is a lot of history to this club and despite the tradition there was a nice relaxed feeling in the bar area. We were seated for soup and sandwiches in a separate room upstairs, overlooking the course. Although the food wasn't difficult, it was well cook and presented and was served by several members of staff who were all chatty and helpful. The views over the mature parkland course were superb and everyone commented on how beautiful it looked - which only built up our anticipation of the days play. We made our way to the large putting green to warm up and although it isn't a totally accurate reflection of the pace and quality of the greens, it was fair. It was also large enough to cater for all 22 players at once [which I think may be a first for this season] There were also a couple of nets to warm up the longer clubs and there was an impressive practice ground and pitching/chipping green. All in all, a very good level of practise/warm up facilities. The first tee allowed for the entire group to gather around and put pressure on each other, which is always a nice thing in society outings. The course was superbly manicured, especially for a parkland track at this autumnal time of year. Yes, there were lots of leaves that had fallen from trees but I cannot recall anyone complaining that it caused them to loose a ball, and this is a good reflection of the fact that the club must keep on top of this to a degree. The fairways were like carpet and were firm [considering the heavy rain before our visit] and springy. There were two obvious cuts of rough and the definition between the fairway and the longer grass was beautifully kept. The tee boxes were all pretty flat on the whole with no major issues. The tee markers were the full width of the tee box which although unusual, did give players great food for thought with tee positions and also made the boxes more presentable as there was less obvious wear marks on them. The greens had recently been hollowtined which although a complete pain, is an understandable part of the golfing season in the UK. Despite this, they actually player pretty fair and although there were a few nasty bobbles, they were firm, dry and consistent. They were also very quick considering and it was obvious that in the summer months they would be a real dream to play on. The bunkers were mostly well kept and raked and had sufficient sand in them. The only compacted and hard bunkers were the ones early in the fairways that would not offer much of a problem unless players had a nightmare tee shot [in which case, you deserve the tougher lies!] The 7th green was a temp as it had been ripped up for some major renovation work. This was explained to us before play and we appreciated that courses have to make these improvements to make the course better in future. It wasn't ideal, but it was totally understandable and no complaints from us. Afterwards, we enjoyed a few beers in the bar and we had one member who bagged a hole-in-one and bought the group a drink each. I think we ordered 19/20 drinks and the total came to around 55 which is extremely competitive. Had he have holed that shot on a hotel complex, the round would have been 3 times as much I am sure. All in all, Childwall Golf Club impressed us all. It was friendly, well priced for the quality it provided and is definitely somewhere we will try to go back to in future years. The only issue raised from the whole day was the lack of ability to pay using bank cards at the bar [or indeed to the club directly, as we had to pay the deposit and balance in cash/cheque]. This is very unusual in the modern electronic age where a lot of people rarely carry cash and pay for things using their debit cards. Not the end of the world, but maybe something to consider. However, the club and course has everything else you would possibly want from a parkland course and we would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it.

I played this course in torrential rain and would like an opportunity to go back in better weather conditions.

I spent the majority of the day in many of the well placed bunkers.

I recently played this wonderful course on our society day out. We had soup and sandwiches before our round, as we have done previously and again the food and staff where excellent. The day before they had cancelled a competition, due to the bad weather. Despite this I found the course in excellent condition. The course was well defined, fairways in good condition and the greens where still quite quick despite the last few days of poor weather. Overall an other excellent day out and i look forward to our next visit. Thank you Childwall Golf Club

First visit here, lovely course nice range of holes. Greens in lovely condition even with heavy downpour the previous day.

Only criticism would be bar prices a little steep and minimum spend on card at £20 not great.

Played here with bunkers golf society 11/6/17.

I have played here a few times now and can say i always enjoy my visit, the course is always in a very top condition, the fairways are well maintained and manicured, the greens were in very very good condition an a pleasure to play on. Its not an overally long course but you have to plot your way round to give you maximum chance to score. Hard to find a bad thing to say really, all i can say is get yourself down and play!

I played here as part of Bunkers golf Societies visit.

We were met by friendly staff who served us some nice sandwiches and a bowl of vegetable soup prior to our round.

Then out to the practice putting green which was in excellent condition. Better than many greens we have played on at different courses in all honesty.

The course itself is an excellent parkland golf course with a nice variety of holes, all in pristine condition.
The greens were a pleasure to putt on, offering a nice smooth roll.
The fairways were beautifully defined and the rough offered a punishing lie should you venture off the short grass.

One or two of the bunkers were a bit below the rest of the courses standard but i imagine this is due to the horrendous rain suffered in this area recently.

I'm sure we will be returning as a society to this venue on a regular basis and i'm already looking forward to our next visit which says it all.

Had the pleasure of playing this course on a wet Sunday afternoon. The course was in excellent condition. The tees, fairways and greens where in great condition. There are 85 bunkers on the course. The course is quite flat so not to demanding on the old legs and feet. Its a beautiful parkland course. We had soup and sandwiches on arrival as part of our package, which made it a very good value for our day. The staff and members made us all very welcome. I look forward to visiting again. Thank you Childwall Golf Club for an excellent day out.

I played here with Bunkers Golf Society on 26th June 2016.

Childwall is a beautiful parkland set up with tight fairways and penal rough that demands accuracy throughout all areas of play. Its main defences are the numerous bunkers scattered on every hole [I believe there are somewhere in the region of 85+ during the 18 holes] and the second cut of rough, which is thick and dense and tricky to play from – particularly in wet conditions [as we found out]

Despite some bad weather in the build-up to our visit, and on the day itself, the course played magnificently and the greens in particular were an absolute credit to the ground staff. Slick, quick and true rolling throughout – they were a joy to putt on [or 4 putt in one members case!]

The bunkers were stocked well but, understandably in the conditions, were a little compacted in places due to the rain. The tee boxes were all flat, well cared for and a pleasure to play from.

The course itself is kind under foot with it being fairly level and therefore it’s not too punishing a round. There are some beautiful holes and the course was in immaculate condition for our visit with well-defined cuts between the fairway and two cuts of rough. The fairways were soft and springy underfoot and were a joy to play off and the course generally was excellently maintained with minimal pitch marks and divots.

The cost of the day’s golf [including soup and sandwiches] was very competitive and the prices in the bar afterwards were reasonable. The staff are always extremely friendly at Childwall, right from the point of organising through the admin office in the build-up to our day’s play, to the bar/catering and pro shop staff.

In summary, Childwall is a club that I would recommend to any golfing society. It offers wonderful facilities, at a competitive price in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The clubhouse may seem a little traditional, but I have absolutely no issue with this and I have not found it to be ‘snooty’ like some similar places can sometimes feel. A wonderful club that offers everything a keen golfer would demand.

A top local course with an excellent layout which is mostly flat throughout and always in beautiful condition from tee to green. Superb practice facilities with immaculate practice greens.
Members very welcoming as are the clubhouse staff and catering team that greeted us with lovely fresh sandwiches and soup followed by coffee. The course played well even in the prolonged down pouring of rain which followed us around all afternoon. Accuracy was rewarded with some heavy rough to be found should you be slightly off line. Always a great day at Childwall, come and play this course, its a lovely track.

I have visited this excellent club several times and have always found it to be in first class condition. My visit with Bunkers Golf Society today left me in no doubt that this is a course and club which offers superb challenge, fun and value for money.
The friendly and courteous welcome we received from the catering team was followed by a tasty and substantial lunch consisting of soup, sandwiches and coffee.
It was then out to the excellent putting green to prepare for the day's round on what proved to be once again a course in top condition with greens running smooth and fast - despite the rain which fell steadily throughout the afternoon. Fairways and bunkers were equally impressive.
Post-round discussion indicated that this is a course which might well merit multiple visits next season as the combination of its location, quality (of course and catering) and excellent value for money make it a very attractive place to play golf!

Childwall is a testing parkland course, demanding accuracy from the tee. (blue tees are wicked)
Childwall presents a very tough test of Golf and can match any course in the area. The course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk. However, some holes do rise and this can affect the run of the ball.

Childwall ranks with the very best of courses in this area of very fine Golf Clubs. You will not be disappointed if you play this course. The greens are fantastic. Such a credit to the greenkeeping staff. Overall the course was in tip top condition

The first thing that strikes you about Childwall is the beautiful Art Deco clubhouse. It's a bit tired looking in places bt yu definitely get a sense of the history of the place. The upstairs dining room has a great open view of the course with the 18th green sitting just in front of you.

As far as the course itself it's a great quality parkland course with plenty of hazards to keep it interesting (LOTS of fairway bunkers - I found enough of them!) The greens are great quality (second only to Lee Park in my opinion). I played a weekday afternoon early summer and the course was practically empty.

At some point in the back 9 - I forget where exactly - there seems to be a quality practice area. Too short for a driver but the opportunity to hit practice shots off grass is a rare thing in most merseyside courses.

The only downside I can see of Childwall is that the clubhouse has a very old-fashioned, members only, not very welcoming feel to it. I'm sure societies are well looked after but as a sole visitor I got a few dirty looks from the members. Modernising the whole culture of this club would go a long way in my opinion.

Played here with bunkersgolfsociety on 5th october. I had heard alot of good things about this course and was keen to get down and play here, let me tell you that it did not disappoint one bit! The clubhouse as you drive in is reminiscent of Royal Birkdale and looks the part. The course was in great condition, the fairways were in pristine condition with great definition between the 1st and 2nd cut of ruff(really snagly in there). Some great thinking holes to keep the bigger hitters thinking as there is a couple of risk reward holes. The greens were in about the best condition you will get for this time of year and in my opinion i bet summer golf here would be exceptional. This would be a course i would like to visit again.

I played the course recently with Bunkers golf Society, The pre round food we had was excellent and the staff very friendly. The Clubhouse is dated but it looks like plans are in place for a renovation. The course was superb, one of my favourite courses played this year (achieving my first ever hole in one on the 6th hole ensures i'll always have fond memories of this course!). fairways in excellent condition and the course is tight in places and offers an excellent test of Golf. The greens were a bit inconsistent and bobbly but i'm sure this is due to the time of the year.

I think this is definitely a course our Society will be visiting again.
