I am leaving a review based on both courses as they are not listed separately. All I can say is this is golf at its finest. You feel like you are playing courses which built the foundations of golf as we now know it. Steeped in history, hallowed footsteps and true links golf, stick them on the bucket list and get yourself up to Scotland

Balcomie Links & Craighead Links

Crail Golfing Society is the 7th oldest golf club in Scotland and features two wonderful courses. The Balcomie Links, designed by Old Tom Morris is a par 69 seaside links layout with tremendous character and charm. The relatively short length can be deceiving because when the wind blows, and it does, the yardage is irrelevant. It features 3 par 5`s and 6 great par 3`s including the difficult 13th and beautiful 14th. "Hell`s Hole", the fifth, is a very demanding par 4 and is aptly named. Curving around the rocky shoreline, this dogleg right can raise your score in a hurry. 6 holes directly abut the North Sea and every hole features a view of the sea. The Balcomie Links is a must play and is worth taking the time to play if you`re in the neighborhood to play the better known St Andrews Links or Kingsbarns Golf Links. Crail is just 3 miles from Kingsbarns and 7 miles from St Andrews.

The second of the two great tracks at Crail is the Craighead Links, Olympic Architect Gil Hanse`s first design outside of the US. It is a championship style links that holds true to the natural lay of the land and is a solid balance of challenging long holes and well designed birdie opportunities. If you make it to Crail be sure to set aside ample time to take a crack at both courses. I played 18 on both courses yesterday in under 5 hours. Isn`t March a fabulous golf month? The Craighead features some truly magnificent holes, especially the dogleg right 2nd, seaward 6th and 7th. The entire back 9 is a triumph of design combined with beautiful scenery featuring terrific sea views and variety. The conditioning of both courses is fantastic and the greens are both challenging and true. Don`t miss a chance to play at Crail Golfing Society, I`m playing on a winter ticket as a visiting American, and it`s the best choice I`ve made since deciding to come to the UK. Cheers.
