A really top course which seems to get better the more holes you play. Greens are right up there with the best. I was there a n a relationship very calm day yet there's some challenging holes and some tough rough that will punish errant shots. One I'll look forward to playing by again.

A group of us stayed in the Dormy recently and played this and the Ladies. Julie who sorts everything out did a great job and made us feel very welcome as did both the staff and the members that we met.

The day was blue skies but my goodness the wind! Probably force 4 gusts and offshore which made the back 9 very testing.

The front nine are just so picturesque winding through the pine trees with blind shots and fast and very testing greens. The greens themselves are ironed and roll beautifully but slow they are not!

On a still day the more exposed back nine might be marginally easier as it is more open but when the wind blows that is when you realise that wind is the best defence on a links course.

Playing both and staying in the Dormy is both a great way of experiencing two first class courses but also gives significant savings.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the guys from Teeuplo today at this event hosted by National Club Golfer, he encouraged me to leave a review, so here I am.

The course was in very good condition and its reputation of being a top class venue was certainly lived up to. Interesting layout and very tight off the tee. Greens were good but slightly slower than I was expecting, no complaints though.

Practice facilities seemed limited, there are scruffy nets across the first tee and a short game area, here may be other facilities but I wasn't made aware of them.

Clubhouse ouzes class and is both traditional and very well presented.

Overall a very good club and a great day out.

Played this wonderful course on 27th March 2016. My handicap is 19.
The course was in great condition considering the weather we have had over the winter. Very tight fairways and not much room for error. You will be punished if drive isn't on the fairway. The Bunkers on the front 9 where mostly GUR. The views as you start the back 9 are amazing. Some really great holes with maybe a few too many that are blind into the green. However this is a top quality must play course.
The greens as expected not at there best and maybe a little behind for this time of year saying that still the best I've played this year.
The club house is full of golfing tradition with the added extra of a full hippos head !!! (Read the plaque)
Great locker room and good practice facilties with large putting area in front of first tee.
Our package included soup and sandwiches. Can't really comment too much on food but what we had was very nice with friendly service.
A great course and great package.

I played Formby Mens course on the 27-3-2016. On arrival the staff our very welcoming. The Fairways where very good, the greens where a little behind where they should be for this time of year, but it is like that for every course at the moment, due to the very wet winter we have had ( the best greens I have played on this spring).. There where plenty of Bunkers not in use (GUR). It is a course I never thought I would ever get to play, but I am so glad I got that opportunity and hope I will again in the future. I would certainly recommend this course.

Played with the bunkers golf society on 27th March
Lovely 1st visit to Formby for me. But all the hype of the venue didn't meet my expectations to be honest
Some fantastic holes Don't get me wrong but not championship aura material for me sorry.
Greens was bobbly but yes you could tell the place was special but not that special for me.
Nice to witness it and at £55 for the day with soup and sandwiches the value was outstandingly good.
I imagine in the summer this place is immaculate.

I played here with bunkers golf society on 27th March 2016.

There is only one way to describe this golf course and that is stunning, the views off the tee boxes are something of a rarity that you see on very few golf courses, bags of character, defined fairways, well placed pot bunkers, it is literally everything you could ask for visually. This is a stern test of golf and definitely having not played here before i was caught out alot! The middle part of the course is the best you can play anywhere in the country in my opinion. It is quite an expensive round at £55 but looking at it if you wanted to play in the summer it is alot cheaper, definitely one every golfer has to experience.
If i had to be picky about one thing it would be the greens, i know the horrendous winter we have had and that the course was still in partial winter rules but i did expect more from a high calibre course like this, they was bobbly and inconsistent and i hate to say it but ive played on better greens this year already. Im sure come the summer months they would be one of if not the best putting surfaces around, ask me if i had the opportunity to play this again and it would be a 100% yes everytime.

I played this course when my society, Bunkers Golf Society, visited on the 27th March 2016.

All I can say about this Golf course is WOW. I have been lucky enough to play some famous Golf courses around the UK but I can safely say I have never played one as breath taking as this. Holes 5-15 are as good as a Golf course can be. Absolutely stunning.

The course was in excellent condition considering the horrendous weather preceding our visit, the greens had recently been treated but you would have to expect that at this time of year as they prime the course for the Summer months.

It is an expensive course to visit but it is one I would definitely recommend you play. If you don't enjoy this course then maybe have a think whether Golf is the sport for you.

what can i say. what an absolute amazing course , played here sun the 27th march and at £55 winter price great deal , from tee to green i cant fault any of it the fairways where so dry even after the fine british weather we've had , it was a very difficult test if you went left or right in the thick dence rough it was a battle to get it bk out in play and with the wind reaking havoc it was a fun battle to. i highly recommend this course to anyone you wont be dissapointed but take alot of balls haha

I am a big fan of this course.. Having played it a number of times it continues to provide a stern test of your golfing ability. On a blustery day with Bunkers Society it was in reasonable condition - after the horrendous winter we have endured - the Tees and fairways were in v good condition, and the greens were as good as we could have expected.. All in all, another top golfing day at Formby.

I love Formby Golf Club. Its that simple.
I have played here previously and have always enjoyed the superb layout and natural contours of the course. The fairways are like the greens on most other courses and those pot bunkers are beautifully manicured and crafted into the fairways - but you do NOT want to end up in them [or its a sideways shot]

The middle portion of the course [Holes 6 through to 14] are simply some of the finest you will find in the UK Interesting layouts, plenty of hazards, risk and reward and stunning views and panoramics. It really does have it all.

I went as part of Bunkers Golf Society on 27th March 2016 and although the course was still in winter condition, it was on full tees and greens.
Many of the bunkers were GUR and the greens had recently been treated but you accept that in March. Despite this, it still played superbly with only the odd bobble on the greens that you wouldn't see in the summer months.

We enjoyed a reduced winter green fee which made the day better value, although it is a touch expensive in the spring and summer. It has bracketed itself in the upper echelon of venues in the UK, such as Royal Birkdale/Liverpool, St Andrews, Gleneagles and so on...and so you are looking at £155 for a round. Is it worth that? If you have the money and are a keen golfer, then yes. But you may only do it once as you tick these top end courses off your 'done' list.

Post round food was pleasant and the staff were friendly. Prices in the clubhouse are average and there is good selection.

We played Formby on the last weekend of the winter at a reasonable rate. The course was playing off full tees and greens and it was blowing a gale. The first 30 minutes were in sideways rain but this still did not spoil what is a superb golf course.
The reputation it has is well deserved. Every hole offers something different. What protects the course is the elements, the bunkers, the heather/gorse, length and undulating greens. Easy then? It's a tough ask for anyone slightly wayward. No slices will find an adjacent fairway as every hole is self contained. No hooks will run gently into fluffy rough with a nice angle in to the green. As mentioned in previous reviews the holes before the turn are just wonderful with 9 being the standout. A long sweeping par 5 with a 30 yard landing strip that you must hit.
The greens weren't perfect but I found that other than the odd bobble they ran ok and the 18th is a slight anticlimax as it's pretty bland.
All in all though it's just a delight to play and I would return to play again in a heartbeat.

This is a very nice and traditional old course with a perfect contrast of park/heathland on the front 9 to more of a traditionall links on the back 9. The 3 hole stretch from 7-9 is some of the best 3 holes you will ever play, anywhere. I was slightly underwhelmed with the greens, I had heard rumours that they were perfect but whether it was the time of day, weather or other factors they seemed slow and untrue, however that is not enough to make you think twice about visitings this fantastic course!

This is the third time the Hole in One Golf Society has played Formby. Its a good start to the season as the course can be relied upon to be in pretty good condition for the time of year. This year, again, didn't disappoint. Course was very dry underfoot and the fairways were lovely. Greens were slightly 'bobbly' but cant really expect much more at this time of year and I'm sure they are pleasure to putt on in the main season.

The clubhouse and facilities are top quality and the welcome by pro, clubhouse reception and bar was very friendly. Soup and sandwiches are included in the green fee of £50 and were a pleasant way to finish the day.

Highly recommended!

Formby has long been a personal favourite of mine, and yesterday had the pleasure of playing it once again. The course was in great condition for the time of year, and was thoroughly appreciated by our group.

The layout is one which maintains your interest throughout, and demands accuracy to plot your way around. Great fun to play, and highly recommended.

Formby is one of my favourite courses in the UK and offers the best quality in layout and greens.
A good time to play is before the end of March when they do great offers on a fourball. There are 100s of red squirrels that live on the course, which is lovley to see. Club offers lots of facilities and some stunning scenery. Don't confuse this course and go to Formby Hall instead as you'll be dissapointed.
