The first six holes were added in recent years and have now blended in well with the existing course. The 4th and 6th greens are only separated by a pond and, when the gound is firm and if the ball is running, you may need to think twice about your shot, when the pins are set close to the pond.
The course has memorable views, in particular when playing down to the green on the second hole, where the verdant and picturesque backdrop is a sight to behold on any day.

A few of our swingers golf society lads had a competitive little knock on one of our favourite local courses. Greens an fairways where in excellent condition best I’ve seen the greens for a while up there. Looks like there will be a few nice improvements to the course for next summer.
Had a slight run in with a not too polite member but all in all we had a great round of golf

I left my last review on 2nd October 2017 and as mentioned, I think its only fair to return to places when work has been done and then conduct a fresh review.

I visited the course last week and in the middle of a particularly hot and dry spell of UK weather - which has been a struggle for a lot of courses.

Gathurst GC was back to its best and looking superb once again. The issues with the greens in 2017 seems to have been rectified and they were rolling slick and true. No more patches and issues on the putting surfaces and they were a pleasure to play on throughout.

The course looked fabulous and had an almost links appearance to it on this visit due to the dry and scorched fairways - which brought its own challenges in terms of balls 'rolling out'. But it was great to see the course back to where I remember it being historically.

The welcome was warm and friendly [as always] and the value in the clubhouse was great. The food we enjoyed pre and post round was tasty and plentiful [try the ham sandwiches - they're a treat!]

I will be returning and taking people back to show them just what this course is all about.

After major problems with their greens last year it was so good to see this lovely course back to its best when I visited earlier this week.
Fairways, greens, tee boxes and bunkers were all the in first class condition....
As always the club’s officials and catering staff provided a warm welcome. The food we ordered was delicious and was sold at prices which offered great value for money.
The course and clubhouse are certainly ones which I am once again happy to recommend without reservation.

I played Gathurst GC as part of Bunkers Golf Society on 29th September 2017 and I play off a handicap of 10.

I must say from the outset that I have played Gathurst many times over the years and have been friends with many members - and I have always historically found the club to be a great 3 season golf course - with the odd winter struggle. It has always had some of the finest greens in West Lancashire and has been one of the best maintained 18 holes in the area.

However, it pains me to have to leave the following review but I am a firm believer in honest and constructive feedback - for fellow golfers, but more importantly the club themselves.

I have played Gathurst GC several times from April to September in 2017 as we have held our marquee society competition at the club called "Last Man Standing". I have played in a variety of weather [both on the day and the build up to matches] and have played at varying points through the spring, summer and autumn to be able to provide a solid review of the course this season....and in all honesty, its been disappointing.

The main issue has been the greens. They have fallen considerably in standard - and despite numerous varying explanations for this, I am unsure as to what the main reason is for this. The lower part of the course has had fully redesigned greens that are now formed to cope better in the wet, winter months. However, all of them are bare, over sanded, uneven and in a really poor condition. They are unplayable at times and its a case of luck rather than skill to get the ball in the hole. Several greens have also suffered from some form of disease that has seen patches of poor grass growth and some kind of moss to have developed. When we played on this latest visit, there were a couple of holes with golf ball sized holes in the green - that looked like pitch marks until you walked up to them and saw they were indeed just holes. Its saddening that the club is suffering from these problems as the course has always been host to some supreme greens that are slick and true in the peak of the summer.

The course also appeared a bit scruffy in parts with bare, stone filled bunkers in places, eleven tee boxes and areas of heavily trodden pathways and walk off areas [that should be roped off/closed during poorer weather to preserve the quality of the course]. On this particular visit, the weather in the 48 hours prior had been horrendous and the course was sodden. This was then compounded by a 15 minute deluge as we waited to begin and in brutal honesty, it should have been closed as it was unplayable. The weather is totally out of the control of the club, but the management and preservation of the course during periods of poor weather is not.
The tee boxes were waterlogged and unplayable and most of the ground was subjected to casual water.

The golfing aside, the club have always been superbly welcoming and friendly - and this visit was no different. All the staff are polite, chatty and warm and cannot do enough to help.

The food on this visit was superb, with a large helping of sandwiches and chips prior to play - followed by a lovely two course meal that filled everyone up. The cost of the day and the price in the clubhouse are very competitive and Gathurst GC offers great value for any visiting parties.

In summary, its been a disappointing summer at the club - and they are well aware of this without having to read this review. I am sure that they are as disappointed as the members and visitors are, and will be working hard to get things back to the `usual standards`. However, it probably won`t be a club I will go back to until I hear that these things are done. Sadly.

Let me say from the outset that I have played the course at Gathurst many times previously and have always found it to be in good to excellent condition depending on recent weather. I have known it to hold water during prolonged wet spells and have also played it when the greens were amongst the best in the region....
That said the course I played yesterday with Bunkers Golf Society was very disappointing.
Yes, there had been heavy rain during the previous night and we had a fifteen minute deluge just prior to our tee time...but in truth the course was pretty awful.
Tee boxes were sodden with many holding surface water. Greens were not really any better and apart from being waterlogged, were lumpy, sandy and wholly unsatisfactory - making putting a complete lottery.
The welcome we received from Barbara the Club Secretary and her team was warm and friendly and the catering team led by Chef Dave and supported by Mike was amongst the best we've had this season.
The club could not have done more to assist us in staging our inaugural Charity Night, where again the food supplied was delicious, plentiful and very reasonably priced.
The club has invested heavily in its course during recent months and perhaps it will take some time before the fruits of their labour and spending become more evident in its condition. We shall see.
It grieves me that I am unable to be more positive about this picturesque track, but the strength of this website is the honesty of golfers' reviews.

Great day for golf weather wise, only issue on the day was the greens but the staff was kind enough to advise this before booking and also advised on the day. This is a great course to play and as society we are back in July and September in which we will be only praying for great weather.

I play off 20 and I'm a member of Bunkers golf society. Played here 13th April 2017 the course was in very good condition fairways and rough as good as you will get for this time of the year. The course has a great layout and you need to be accurate to give yourself a chance of a good score. The greens let this course down. The poor weather and what looked like a disease had really affected them
However the role and speed where very good. What I would say is that the green keepers where out in numbers and working hard to recover the greens. I'm sure this will be resolved in a few weeks. Would recommend this course

Played in an invitational in August and really enjoyed the course. Not the longest but a challenge due to the number of trees and the positioning of bunkers and greens. Most of the greens were a good speeds and true and the course very well looked after.

Lovely mature, parkland golf course with some really nice holes full of character. Plenty of scope to hit the driver if you so wish but you will be punished should you go offline.
Lush fairways and greens that run smooth and true. Definitely one to visit if you're in the area.

The Northwest of England is renowned as "The Golfing Coast" of the UK with many well known courses that people come from far and wide to play.

However, if you are prepared to delve off the beaten track and try places that don`t necessarily get the attention of the well known venues then you are likely to find quite a few absolutely superb courses. Gathurst is one of those courses.

First and foremost, its a traditional style club with the emphasis on all the things that are important to a top draw golf club. The greens are cared for and the course is looked after and primed for the golf season. If you are looking for winter golf [between October and April] then as with most great clubs, expect to be playing out of the first cut, off mats and on winter greens.

The beauty of this is that in the prime golfing months, this course is in absolutely immaculate condition and fom tee to green you will not be disappointed.

The course requires as much thought as it does brute force and with cleverly placed hazards and a wise use of the natural contours of the land it is a course that you will come away from knowing that you have earnt your score.

The views out over the Lancashire hills just add to the overall experience and with some absolutely beautiful holes it will be a course you will want to visit more than once.

After the round, the clubhouse has a warm family feel and the prices and quality are superb. I`ve enjoyed many a pint whilst watching friends come down the 18th fairway with a big smile on their faces.

A delightful parkland course that ranks as high as anything else in the area.
