I played the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles [2014 Ryder Cup course] with friends from Bunkers Golf Society on 28th April 2017.

Firstly, what an unbelievable experience Gleneagles is for any avid golfer. The whole set up is just impressive from the moment you drive through the gates. The best way I can describe it is like Augusta of the UK. Literally, everything you see is immaculate. From the bedding flowers as you walk around, to the decor in the changing rooms. However, the courses [rightly] are the stars of the show.

The PGA is a course that seems to divide opinion if you read online reviews. Its a different animal from the 2 others at Gleneagles - with them being cut and contoured more into the natural undulations of the land and the PGA being more placed into the surroundings. Also, the length of walk between green and next tee is typically American with long and winding cart paths that must add a couple of miles to the overall walk of the course. The fact that you can only hire buggies for the PGA tells you its a long old walk. However, don't let these points put you off as this is a sensational 18 holes of golf that Jack Nicklaus has designed.

There's more of a PGA/USA feel to the course, with plenty more water and the placement of bunkers, but the views and appearance are in keeping with everything else at Gleneagles - simply unreal.

Being able to walk through the tunnel to the 1st tee [that is still bearing the branding from the Ryder Cup] and hit the tee shot that I had watched all those Pro's smash down the 1st tee was just superb.

The course offers something for everyone and is an absolute joy to play. Its hard to pick a favourite from all 3 courses at Gleneagles, and it will likely depend on the condition of the 3 at the time of your visit or how you play on them. However, the PGA takes some beating because of that added bonus of having hosted the Ryder Cup.

The greens were a bit behind where they would want them to be - due to them being 1/2 weeks behind on the maintenance schedule and also because of weather issues slowing growth, but they were still far better than most I will play on in the UK at this time of year. They were lightening quick and rolled true.

The experience of Gleneagles is something everyone should experience. Yes, it doesn't come cheap - but it offers value relative to what you get. We were fortunate to enjoy a favourable rate due to an offer that was in place during early 2017, but its definitely somewhere you should try and play.

The club house isn't cheap [£5.50 per pint and £14 for a glass of red wine!!!] but you don't HAVE to buy in there to enjoy the sheer quality of the venue.

Wow, just wow. An absolutely fantastic Golf course. A real pleasure to play. The course is in absolutely prisitine condition (as you would expect) and is a joy to play for any keen golfer.

To walk through the tunnel, that is still adorned with the Ryder cup Images, onto the first tee and hit the teeshot that i watched the Ryder Cup teams hit was just incredible.

The only reason i haven't given the greens 10/10 is that they were still being prepared for the perfect condition they will be in for the height of the golfing season in the summer. Other than that, this is a faultless golf course. Magnificent!

I had the joy of playing this course on the final day of a three day golfing break with friends from Bunkers Golf Society.
We had previously played the other two courses available at the resort and had all agreed that these had been the best tracks we had ever had the privilege of playing.
The courses are simply stunning in terms of their layout, condition and presentation.
The staff could not have been more courteous or welcoming.
The weather was unusually dry and mild throughout.
I would highly recommend this course to any serious golfer!
The Dormy House was very comfortable and the bar extremely well stocked. At £14 for a glass of red wine though (yes £14!) some might choose to have their post round drink elsewhere.

Best Ryder Cup ever?

Not many have been fortunate enough to stand on the first tee representing your country / continent in first tie out in the Ryder Cup matches. In 2014 it was the turn of Justin Rose and Bubba Watson. For those of us fortunate enough to be there to see it, the atmosphere was spine tingling. It's impossible to recreate that feeling but stepping onto the first tee at the wonderful Jack Nicklaus designed PGA Centenary course you get the slightest tingle of what it might have been like for Justin and Bubba.

The hole itself is a real test. The fairways narrows considerably as you get further and further down towards the green. A good second shot into a slightly elevated green gives you the tantalising chance of that opening birdie but walking off with a 4 is never considered disappointing.

The par 5 second sees you having to work the ball around a testing bunker as the hole doglegs right to left with the green set to the right of a pond which sits to the left of the 9th tees.

Don't forget to hand your clubs to your Sherpa as you take a long walk up the hill from the 2nd green to the 3rd tee - probably the longest walk between green and tee at this, and many other, golf courses.

The third doglegs the opposite way from the 2nd as it winds up a hill towards the tricky par 3 4th.

As you wind your way through the Perthshire countryside keep your eyes peeled for deer and those eagles from which the resort takes it name.

Rather than continue the hole by hole commentary let me pick out a few of my personal favourites.

The 9th and 18th came in for considerable criticism following an initial redesign (leading to a schism between the resort and Nicklaus) but both that criticism and the split was healed by some fantastic work to remodel these two holes in the run up to the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Both holes are now very much amongst the best holes on the course. The 9th favours a cut second shot over a pond into a picturesque green elevated from the fairway. Don't over cut though or it's a watery grave for your ball!

The 11th up the hill from the little halfway hut (designed to look like a railway buffet carriage, presumedly a nod to the resorts heritage and the proximity of Gleneagles train station - it's just over the motorway from the 10th green / 11th tee) rewards the golfer who consults his stroke saver before reaching for the driver; hit the big dog well and you'll be in a ditch over the hill! Leave yourself your ideal yardage into the green and a birdie is a real possibility.

Skipping ahead to 16 a good drive will leave you with a quandary over whether to take on the second shot (over that ditch again) into a tricky green or lay it up. Decisions, decisions.

Either way only a 180 yard par 3 then lies between you and the 18th tee.

Onto the 18th tee and a deep bunker lying to the right of the fairway as it turns from left to right will gobble up any balls with too much left to right spin.

Get yourself into the middle of the fairway and you'll have a good view of the green complex which Mr Nicklaus altered considerably just a few years ago.

Approached from the left the false-fronted green is basically in 2 halves; you should definitely take a good look at where the pin is before selecting your club for the approach shot!

Anything left, right or short will find a collection area or bunker and really test you to get up and down.

All in all it's a terrific course which tests every part of your game. Come in with a good score and you'll have driven the ball well, shown a mastery of the short game and putted solidly.

Also worthy of a mention are the treatment you'll get from the staff. In the Dormy House, at the driving range and at the starters hut you'll be treated like royalty. A tremendous experience.

Played the Kings Course and it might be the most beautiful course I have ever played. Every single hole had breathtaking views and each and every hole on this old course presented a very different challenge. Lots of blind tee shots and second shots but nothing seemed unfair or overly penal - if you hit good shots, you get rewarded.

The facilities are excellent and the staff made the experience very enjoyable. By comparison to other "major" Scottish courses, the green fees are not too expensive either.

Would definitely recommend this course.

Ryder Cup Venue

Is a great place to play. Ryder Cup Venue. The PGA Course is in great condition for time of year. Just need to improve on signage as is difficult to find your way around the course and they could make an effort to make your experience at the Ryder Cup Venue better....photo's on 1st tee, bag tags etc....included at other venues but not here. Shame really. Still worth playing.
