Hilly and short but tough test

Got a cheap rate from teeofftimes (£13 with admin fee) and this course was definitely good value for money. Hilly course with some interesting blind shots and tricky holes which makes up for it being fairly short (Par 69). Even though I was having an off-day (+18 on a 6 handicap!) I enjoyed this course and already have a return visit planned in for mid-week. The greens were deceptively fast despite being very receptive. Last hole is a cracker.

Over the years Hawarden has always been a club that is well maintained and whilst all clubs have good and bad times has managed to produce a course that is well presented.

I was therefore surprised by the condition of the course following a recent visit, the greens were as poor as I have encountered on any golf course, extremely slow and uneven and clearly needing to be cut, the overall appearance of the course was also scruffy around edges and left a lot to be desired.

Maybe we just played on a bad day and should be given the benefit of the doubt but I have to say I was really surprised and very disappointed.

A response from Hawarden Golf Club

Hi Monty, We are sorry to hear we did not meet your usual high expectations of HGC, however in defence of the green staff they had just finished maintenance on the greens (coring and tining) and that takes up all their time during that week. We hope that you will once again return and enjoy a game at Hawarden. Alex Rowland Secretary & PGA Professional

This course is always well maintained and a good test because of the changes in elevation till the 13th. If you are not too fit - take your time or get a buggy. Some of the holes are among the best in the area. The first is intimidating until you've played it a few times. From the tee it looks like an 8 iron to the top of the dogleg. It's not. It's about 190 yrds over a ravine!
The 9th hole is a beauty and the 18th can make your day if you get it right but, depending on the wind, can be a pw right upto a 7 iron.
The greens are always good but the course suffers in the winter wet and does seem to close a lot.
A great course and very friendly.

Played on a sunny afternoon. Lovely course, quite big greens with a couple of tight fairways. Round spoilt by slow play. Back nine took around 3 hours for a 2 ball. Only downer on what is a good course and great value at £14
