Hillside Golf Club is situated in Southport, the home of "Englands Golf Coast". The course forms part of England's finest stretch of coastal links being adjacent to Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale with Formby Golf Club a few miles down the road. A true championship links, Hillside is proud to have been chosen to host Open Championship Final Qualifying each year from 2014, together with a superb track record in hosting the worlds major amateur events.

From the white tees the course at Hillside measures just over 7,000 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. From the blue tees the course is a more manageable 6,558 yards. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea.

I had the enormous pleasure of playing this magnificent course on Thursday, 29th August as part of a Charity Golf Day in support of “The Children’s Charity Merseyside.”
This delightful venue has for many years enjoyed a wonderful reputation for the quality of its course - and rightly so, but what I found to be equally impressive was the exceptional quality of the facilities and catering on offer together with the warm and friendly welcome I received from members and staff alike.
I found all those affiliated to the club to be excellent ambassadors, always helpful, courteous and friendly.
I believe that committee members - together with a course architect - are soon to develop plans and make some changes to the front nine of this superb course, but it will be a hugely difficult task I’m sure, to improve what is already a top class layout.
The fairways are beautifully manicured and defined with two or three grades of cut. The greens are fast and smooth and a well struck putt will usually find the bottom of the cup. The immaculately kept bunkers are very strategically placed and add significantly to the defences of the course.
Although there had been torrential rain in the area throughout the previous day, there was absolutely no sign of casual water anywhere around the course, confirming for me that this is a course which is playable all year round.
If you get the opportunity to play this course take it! It is an experience which will challenge and delight golfers of all abilities in equal measure. One word of advice though....stay on the fairways....you will pay dearly for any errant shots into the rough.
One member perfectly summed up for me what this club really is about when he said “Hillside is an elite golf club, but its members are not elitist.” Long May it continue!

I found this course as big a test of my game as anywhere I've ever played but loved it! I really had to think about every shot and deal with a variety of weather conditions.

The course is exceptional and in incredible condition. You'd never have known it was November (I was wearing spikeless shoes)

The clubhouse facilities and food is top class. The staff and members are very welcoming and I'd recommend a round there to anyone.

Played the course in June 2016 with a member and two other guests. As soon as arriving at the course, people at the club made ourselves feel welcome. Playing the course did not disappoint. As soon as teeing off from the 1st I could see some lovely layouts of the adjoining courses of Royal Birkdale and Southport and Ainsdale Golf Clubs. The course we were playing that day however, Hillside was a total delight. Tee boxes and fairways well maintained and greens very true. A nice touch was to stop for 5 minutes at the half way house to have a quick sandwich and drink. Then on to the back nine to play most picturesc set holes I have ever had the pleasure to play. Views out to the Irish Sea where amazing. Once finishing the round it was back to the club house for a beer and chat about the great golf experience that is Hillside. Will definitely want to go back this summer. A must for any keen golfer to take a visit.

Probably the best course on the golf coast. A great test of golf that can bring even the best golfers down to earth. I would happily play at this place all day every day. Can't wait to go back!

Having always wanted to play this course I got the chance to this year. I have played the best courses around the north west but this is definitely the one for me. In my opinion Hillside is head and shoulders above the rest..Birkdale included! The tricky front 9 is completede eclipsed by the most amazing back 9 I have ever seen in golf. I played it late in the evening and the sun going down over the dunes and the light shining through the trees was like something out of a picture book. If I win the lottery I know who my first phone call will be to..and it won't be the wife!

Hillside is widely acknowledged as being one of England's finest courses, and rightly so.

The layout winds thoughtfully around the natural terrain, and presents a variety of different challenges as the round progresses. There will generally be a coastal breeze adding to the level of difficulty.

The course condition generally is always first class, with greens that run true without being punishingly fast.

The stand-out hole for many is the delightful par 5 11th, but in truth there are many fabulous golf holes here. A worthy accompaniment to its next door neighbour, Royal Birkdale.

Treat yourself and play here if you can.

I had the great pleasure and privilege of playing this wonderful links layout on a fine, testing, breezy day in the company of three great friends.
Our pre-round coffee with bacon and egg toasties served with coleslaw and salad was courteously delivered to our table by a very helpful and efficient lady was a great way to begin our morning.
Although the overnight weather had been extremely wet there was not a sign of the deluge anywhere on the immaculate fairways or greens. This is clearly a course managed and maintained by people who are leaders in their chosen professions. It was an absolute delight from start to finish!
Our match went down to the last putt on the last green which only added to the excitement of our experience. The unanimous view of our group was that
the fine reputation which this magnificent course enjoys is well earned and fully justified.

A superb links course with the narrowest fairways I've ever encountered, you are gently drawn into the excellently laid out course offering a little more room and forgiveness but once at the 5th hole, you just know things are going to get tougher, and we were playing off the blues!

The course was playing very long due to a very strong prevailing wind, which felt like we were driving into it on almost every tee after the 1st 6 holes! The large undulating greens were very inviting, if you got that far and stayed out of the wispy grasses and rough that lined the fairways, this rough would take a shot off you immediately.

Its not until your on the back 9 with the sand dunes and pines forming a stunning and beautiful backdrop to many of the holes that you really know and appreciate you are playing a top quality course. The 11th is most definitely Hillsides signature hole, into the wind it was brutal, I got an excellent drive down the fairway but it was so inviting to take-on the green in 2 between the mounds only then to hit it over the right mound losing my ball as it caught the wind, 2 x irons would have been the sensible approach but hey! The 12th, 13th & 14th again into the wind but less than 400yds all played like par5's and then the par3 16th you needed a driver to make the green at only 183yds, and we were all still short!

The 17th is a tough long par5, I may have left a ball over on Birkdales course! The 18th is a really nice finishing hole approaching the clubhouse, another good drive is required off one of the many raised tees with stunning panoramic views, I hit driver & 3w solid and was still 55yds short of the green!

The clubhouse, bar & food was excellent, the Pro shop was extremely friendly and offered advice and informed us of deals that day.

Overall, a stunning course which will play differently dependent on the weather of the day and a service from the Hillside staff that they should all be very proud of.

I travelled from Coventry and it was well worth the journey, even though the traffic home was as brutal as Hillsides rough :-)

There's not a lot to say about Hillside which has not been said already - I couldn't fault the course in any way at all! Great layout, great facilities, great clubhouse. The prestige of the course speaks for itself and it is no wonder at all why Hillside has, and will continue, to hold so many great championships. A must play for anybody who gets the chance!
