Played the course in a society competition on 15/5/17. The course itself was in good condition but the greens were very bumpy and slow. This is not as they normally are and can only say the weather has affected the maintenance on them. As is usual everything else was good.

Played the course in a society competition on 9/8/16. The greens were slower than they are normally at this time of year but this wasn't a bad thing. The course as usual was in very good condition. You always receive a warm welcome here from the Pro shop and reception. I believe that the caterers have been changed very recently and this showed in the quality of the food. Very good. The 17th hole is tremendous. Well worth a visit. My society play here often and it never disappoints.

Played in a society round at the course today. It was very wet in parts. The greens are normally fantastic but with the poor weather recently the greens had suffered. Away from the course the food has gone up in price greatly recently (too expensive for a golf club) I just hope this nice course is not going towards the wedding part of the business too much. One of the better course in Derbyshire but I hope it is not going down hill.

11th June, 2015, by rugbyliberator99

Over two days, Sunday 7th and Monday 8th June 2015 Horsley Lodge golf club, Derbyshire was taken over by 60 Midlands based police officers.
There was no local catastrophe or major disaster and the course had done nothing wrong to attract such a high level of police attention.
It was merely the playing of the annual Regional Police Service of the United Kingdom Tournament. All 60 golfers had to qualify to play in the event and handicaps ranged from scratch to the maximum allowance of 18.
The event is always 54 holes to allow a practice day. The practice day coincided with the playing of the prestigious Men’s Open competition and 32 of the police competitors decided to play in this event as part of the practice round.
188 golfers played throughout the day and the course was set up to be at its most defensive. It was in beautiful condition and the course conditioning was immaculate. Greens were flat and true and the pin placements sought to test all levels.
The winning score was 66 and we had one police team on the winner’s podium in 8th place with a 69.
Several of the players stayed at the venue overnight and reported that the accommodation was excellent with superb food. This did not surprise me as the restaurant has been a finalist on the Derbyshire Restaurant of the Year competition for the last 3 years.
Despite my pointing many of the opposition teams in the direction of the great real ale’s on offer all entrants appeared bright eyed ready for play the following day. Was I being hospitable or was it part of a cunning plan as the non playing Derbyshire Team captain?.
Monday morning saw the course bathed in sunshine. As organiser I had a word with the Head Green Keeper Russell Allan to congratulate him on the course presentation and we set up the pin placements for our championship.
If you are looking for a venue for your golf society or group I defy you to find better than Horsley Lodge.
They have a brilliant balance between the needs of the members and the extra revenue outside groups bring in. There are restrictions when non members are allowed to play so to ensure we had a clear course and a two tee start I had secured our booking almost two years ago! ( Will writing about this make it even harder in the future? I hope not because as many golfers as possible should have the chance to enjoy this golfing experience)
We had 60 golfers out and playing within 80 minutes using both 1st and 10th tee’s and none had any issues around pace of play even after 36 holes of testing medal golf.
Prizes were awarded for best Gross and Nett Individual and teams.
Check out the club website if you want to know more about the course layout as they have a 3 Dimensional fly over available to see every hole on this Peter McEvoy designed gem. www.horsleylodgegolfclub.co.uk
Special thanks must be made to Bob and Yvonne Gibbs who are both past Captains of the club for their help and guidance in ensuring the smooth administration of the event. All golfers were made away members for the event and all scores are detailed within the How Did I Do web site.
Of particular note is the score of 4th place John Rocks from Northamptonshire Police in the afternoon round.
He recorded his first ever hole in one on the beautiful par 3 12th.
This hole is known as Dawson’s Meadow and is described by Peter McEvoy as one of his best designs. An achievement to be savoured. The drink afterwards certainly was.
Standard Scratch Score for both rounds was 75, over the usual 71 off the white tee’s.
We had excellent food throughout the day. The presentation party was led by the Derbyshire Deputy Chief Constable Alan Goodwin QPM. He is also a keen golfer.
He seemed to particularly relish the fact that he was able to present the prizes to each individual champion, as both came from Derbyshire.
Winner of the Gross prize was Paul Tatlow playing off scratch with a 153 total.
Winner of the Nett prize was Adam Jablonski playing off 18 who scored a memorable 149 total. The only golfer in the tournament to record an under par score.
Do we think this is a good venue? We had several requests from participants to book the premises for our next turn to organise in 5 years time. A very strong recommendation from a group who are usually hard to please.

Competed in a friendly against the club this afternoon as part of a visiting Golf Society. A really good course in very good condition for the time of the year. Lovely greens and good company with a cracking meal to follow. This course has come on in leaps and bounds over recent years, a good test of golf and an excellent course for any society to visit.

Played here with my local Society on a warm dry day. The course is well maintained, with excellent greens and decent fairways. There are some bare patches throughout the course, even at this early time in the season which would benefit from some tlc. This is a popular venue for weddings and parties as well as golf so be prepared to share the facilities with others.

Played on 7 & 9 April. This is a tough course but provides an interesting round of golf. The course for this time of year was in good condition. I play this course in the summer and can tell you that the greens are very challenging. They are fast and undulating. There is always a friendly welcome to visitors.

Played on 17th February and the course was in great condition and was relatively dry considering the weekends rain. Horsley Lodge has some great holes with a variety of length and width and the undulations in the American style greens really make you think about each putt. Horsley is a stunning course with some great facilities and the staff in the Proshop were really helpful and if the course was a little closer i would be joining tomorrow!

Fantastic, quality layout.Brilliant greens all year round. During the winter, mats are required through the green ensuring superb quality fairway as the better weather arrives.A figure of 8 layout so very easy to do 9 holes if that is the only time available.Good practice range with Golf Mark accreditation. In my opinion the final 4 holes are the best finishing sequence in the Midlands. The 17th is rated currently as the most difficult in the county.Stroke index 1, it needs sunday best drive and best iron into a beautiful island green. This hole ruins many a round.Check out the website as they have a virtual 3D flyover facility so you can see all the holes fully.Clubhouse is great with the attached restaurant being a finalist in the county wide best restaurant competition for the last 3 years.I have not used it but there is also great quality accommodation available for all customers on the site.Good real ales available in the bar.I love this course. One of my favourite courses in the Midlands. In the summer I would give this course even higher ratings.Continual course improvements year on year make this a real gem of a golf course. The picture is from a sign on the 16th were a visitor made a grave tactical error and parked their buggy in the lake.I told you it was a difficult hole!Check out the website its a belter. www.horsleylodge.co.uk
