Magnificent panoramic views over the Lancashire plain and the Welsh hills makes Houghwood an interesting course to play. At par 71 and 6388 yards for men, and 5341 yards par 71 for ladies, it provides a stimulating and pleasurable test of skill. The large greens built to USGA specification are probably the finest in the area and a permanant track allows the use of the large fleet of buggies and trolleys the whole year round.
Visitors whether groups, societies or individuals are all welcome at Houghwood.
Please note we are a soft spike course.

May brought us to another new course on our society roster, Houghwood.

This course is well signposted from the Rainford bypass, the same road where you will also find the North West National Golf Club. You don't really get the feel as your driving in that this course is perched on the side of Billinge Hill, but believe me it is! Credit must first be given to the staff at Houghwood, in particular the club secretary ( whos name unfortunately evades me! ) who was standing in for the chef to cook our very tasty bacon buttys. One of our organisers was running late but it made no difference, the help given to us by the staff at the course helped us get organised with minimal fuss.

The clubhouse here is very impressive, with a feel of elegance that you feel bellies a course of this cost and lack of prestige. Excellent changing facilities, big leather couches, great club shop and touches of finesse all around.

The 1st is a lovely par 4 played downhill from an elevated tee box, sweeping round to the left as the hole falls away in front of you. The longer you are the better here as there is a long carry to the green.

There are some great par 3's on this course but the 2nd isn't one of them. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad about it, just a vey straightforward short and flat par 3 of about 125-130 yards.

The 3rd hole is the first hole of " the climb ". From here on in its uphill all the way! Drive it left of the trees that jut out from the right side of the fairway and you will have nothing more than a sand wedge into the large green.

The 4th is a very solid par 3 played into the wind. A big bank of thick rough on the left will catch anything drifting that way, while several bunkers are on the right to make this an "accuracy is key" hole.

A long par 4 5th hole sets you up nicely for one of many wonderful holes that your about to face on this course. Standing on the tee at the 6th I swear you can see other continents your so high up! The hole falls away from your feet and your left with a gorgeous par 4 downhill driving hole where you can visualise plonking one right on the dance floor. Such a shame the I hooked mine left into the trees! You could get 100 balls from the range and stay on this hole hitting tee shots all afternoon!

The 8th hole just shades it as the best par 3 on the course! You walk up the path from the 7th and as you approach the 8th tee all you can see on your journey is water and a 2 tier green in the distance. From the visitors tees your hitting anything from a 7 to 5 iron to clear the water and land safely on the green. I hit a cracking 6 iron right into the middle of the green but 3 putted with the hole cut right on the slope of the 2 tier green.

At this point I'm going to stop, purely because this course has so many good holes from here on in that I will run out of superlatives to describe them all! The 12th is the signature hole, another brilliant drivable downhill par 4 ( watch the pot bunkers ) and the 16th is a superb par 3 that could play anything from a 5 wood to wedge depending on the wind. Today it was mid iron territory and Tommy killed the nearest the pin competition by knocking a 5 iron to within 3 foot.

You get the point, this course really does have great hole after great hole!

The overall condition was nothing to write home about. It wasn't in bad condition by any stretch but its fair to say that we have played better, not significantly better though.

There was however one HUGE bug bear that would stop us coming back here unless we were given guarantees that it wouldn't happen again. We have some bad knees in our society, 3-4 of our players simply cant play without a buggy. This is rarely a problem as we only play courses that rent buggies and we book them months in advance. However Houghwood ( despite the fact its Mid May ) enforce a " buggies on the tracks only " rule. This caused absolute chaos and ruined the day for the 4 lads who were in buggies, all in the same group as each other. It doesn't sound that bad on paper, but when one hits it left and one hits it right, someone who cant walk very fast then has to go looking for their ball right across the other side of the fairway, hit it, then walk right back across. Then repeat for 18 holes and you get some seriously sore legs and a seriously slow game of golf.

We sat in the sun on the outside patio area that overlooks the 18th green and watched the groups come in, eating a frankly stunning " posh fish finger butty " special of the day. It really was awesome!

For me, as a non-buggy player, this was a great course and one that I would have no hesitation in returning to. The variety of holes alone is worth the green fee. The downhill par 4s and 3s will live long in the memory of anyone who plays them. But I have a responsibility for the society as a whole and the issue with the buggies really did ruin it for the lads in question. I have no idea why they are enforcing this rule in spring/summer, the fairways were bone dry.

This is a very hilly course so buggies are a necessity for a quite a number of players I would imagine, and for this reason they need to loosen up a bit on this as many people simply couldn't play this hilly creature without a buggy.

Should you give Houghwood a try, absolutely. But use your legs!

Played here with the Swingers golf society for the first time. Firstly hospitality was excellent breakfast and coffee was served on time and of an exceptional standard. Course was in excellent condition with fairways and greens finely manicured, only downside yardage markers were only set at 150 and not always visable. A tough walk on the legs anyone struggling with mobility would require a buggy.

Played Houghwood last weekend with Hawthorne Golf Society. Lovely course though out and in great condition, with some excellent views. Tough course when the wind is up and for the less fit, a buggy will ensure you enjoy your round. Nice clubhouse with great food selection. Will definitely be returning soon.

Solid scores for a course that deserves nothing less.

The fairways are very busy to keep things interesting, and to walk the course is a challenge in itself. I think it's a touch OTT in that sense, but it's a feature of this course. Just when you think you've reached the highest point, up you go again. Until you reach a very special par 3 with a daunting tee shot way down onto the green. 18th green right outside the clubhouse which I believe is the only way to end a round.

One of my favourite courses. Views to die for with a panorama from Warrington right across to Blackpool with Liverpool bang in the middle. You can see for miles if the weather is good.

The course itself is very hilly, and it feels like more holes go up hill than down but that can't be right - what goes up must come down.

I've played this course about 4 or 5 times now and the greens were not as good as on previous occasions - they were not bad - but I think I've seen them quicker than they were.

Every hole has something to offer, even the short 2nd with its narrow opening and clever bunkers. It's really difficult to pick stand out holes but 6,8,9,12, and 16 are superb.

There is a practice area to the right of the 1st and practice net for a warm up. Small practice green (not sure if there was a chipping area).

I had a burger and drink post game and it was very good - staff were very friendly. A little bit pricey compared to other venues we've been.

Would I recommend you to play if you've not been - definitely!

Love this course, played a few times and it never disappoints me. Very hilly, long walks uphill between holes makes for a great cardio and leg workout, members must be super fit!

Some spectacular holes, the par 3 16th is one of my favourite holes anywhere, some very long par 4s, you'll need to be good off the tee to stand a chance here. Greens frustratingly hard to read, i must have found the only 2 good bunkers on the course judging from other reviews.

Great clubhouse set up, expensive beer but you'll need a pint after all that walking, a good day out. I hope to play here again.

I was looking forward to playing this course 16 months on from our previous visit.

It's still an excellent course all round with brilliant variety of holes. Definitely not your standard hit it up one fairway then back down the next! There is a lot of OOB on this course due to its location so you have to be accurate off the tee and playing into the greens.

The tee boxes were decent, not the best but certainly adequate, the rough was thick but not too long which gave you a chance to recover, the fairways were good but could possibly of been better and the greens were excellent albeit didn't seem to roll true to the line.

One let down was the majority of bunkers had very compacted sand, I only went in one and while it wasn't compacted it was full of stones.

However this course does have one absolutely infuriating rule that prevents buggies from driving on the fairways. I can understand this in winter when it's wet but this was mid August and the course was bone dry. You have to stick to paths that aren't always that close to the fairways. Far far to over protective and something that might stop us coming back. The lads in buggies probably walked as far as those without.

The clubhouse here is very nice, very elegant but has sky sports, a good selection of ales and serves excellent food that almost all of our group tried.

Houghwoods well worth a game if you are capable of walking hilly courses.

This first thing I will say is Houghwood is a tough course so you will need to be on your A game to score well here.

Extremely hilly but with superb views for miles it`s long, tricky and tough there are some brilliant holes and the rest are very very good this is a course you will enjoy!

The clubhouse is fantastic I can not rate it highly enough it is one of the best you will see. All the staff a very friendly helpful and welcoming. You get a great pint here and the food is spot on.

A criticism of Houghwood is the needlessly over protective way of their course regarding buggies. Last year after we played we mentioned not being able to go off the paths in them and we was told that if we booked for August 2016 we would be able to use them normally, but this was not the case today. We do have members who struggle with a lot of walking so rely on buggies to get them through a round. If you are walking from the buggy path to your ball all the way around this tiring hilly course you are doing an awful lot of walking and it defeats the object of hiring one. I understand they want to look after their course but there was absolutely no reason for not being able to use them in the normal way today.

One other criticism is the bunkers, they are dreadful. No sand they looked like compacted soil. I went in one and it was horrid!

"Relax on the buggies in the summer months Houghwood and put some new sand in the bunkers this course would be getting top marks because it`s a great place to come to play golf and to relax afterwards"
