The course, measuring 6512 yards with a par of 71, and designed by James Braid in 1932 (5 times open champion and Britain's greatest course architect), provides a challenge to every golfer, especially the classic dogleg ninth, the demanding seventeenth known as 'Braids Best', and the daunting elevated tee to the final green.

Braid's achievement was to construct a course in harmony with the existing landscape, that did not prevent him from introducing spectacular touches of theatre. The most striking effect come after 11 holes. Suddenly this parkland course reveals an unexpected seaward aspect, looking out towards the open bay.

    9th May 2014

This week it was a trip up North on the M6 to Lancaster Golf Club. Like many of its followers on social media we had been teased with some great photos from the course since the start of the season, so we thought we should take a closer look.

It has to be said it wasn't the best the best day for golf, the journey had been through torrential downpour and I wondered how the course would stand up and whether it may be closed such was the intensity of the rain. The entrance to the course is through a grand stone pillared gateway leading to a sweeping driveway and onto the wonderful clubhouse. A building full of character that will have witnessed a hard luck story or two over the years following a round.

The Proshop is located in a separate building close to the 1st and 10th tee. I was met by the Professional, David and a lovely lady who were extremely welcoming and sincere in their manner. The pro shop itself was full of every leading brand and I noticed had a separate section to cater for the ladies.

With no sign of the rain easing I decided to make my way to the first tee. The 1st is a lovely hole to start but quite tough, it is a dog leg right and if you do make a good position of the tee you will still have a long 2nd to a small and well guarded green. I then enjoyed the 4th, a lovely par 3 with an elevated tee with nice views across the holes to follow. When I reached the 6th tee I had a spin round to take in some wonderful views which in the latter part of the round when the rain had cleared, turned put to be over the Fylde coastline and Blackpool Tower in the distance. 6 was another lovely Par 3, I found the 9th to be in line with the stroke index, it was ranked number one and was easy to understand as to why. A tight tee shot was required and it had to be reasonably long to have a view to the green for your second, easy to notch a big number.

The course continued to throw up a diverse range of quality golf holes but I particularly enjoyed the finish, 15 to 18 provide some wonderful holes with 17 and 18 offering two belters. Stroke two 17 sweeps from right to left as a par 4 and then the elevated Par 3 18th is the icing on the cake to round off a superb parkland course.

Even with the deluge of rain the greens soon drained and the putting surfaces were as good as you will play. They we're cut tight, rolled quick and not a blemish on them gave a perfect roll.

The Clubhouse offers the benefit of a Dormy which accommodates up to 18 which is a great facility for societies. All in all a parkland course of real class and makes you realise what amazing courses we have dotted around the UK, get out there and enjoy this beauty.

Played this lovely golf course last Friday 1st September 2017.
The day started with bacon barms, tea or coffee. 9 hole fun comp in the morning, putting comp before lunch, soup and sandwiches then a full 18 holes in the afternoon.
To finish the day off a two coarse meal at night in the club house.
A very good and enjoyable day alround once again, would strongly recommend.

we had our first major of the season here the 29/7/17 with swingers golf society. I heard some great things about this place leading up to our event, and I wasn't disappointed with what I was greeted with as I pulled up. the stunning building that I can only describe as a castle. wowww.
the course was playing fantastic and the greens had some zip to them too. think this is my best course I've played on this season. can't wait to return next summer to defend my title.

This was our first visit to Lancaster Golf Club and it’s fair to say it won’t be our last.

The clubhouse is Ashton Hall, which is an impressive manor house that imposes itself over the course and practice areas. It’s a fabulous greeting to the club and creates an aura from the outset.

The green and lush course sits in the background and from the early views of it, you can tell that it’s going to be a great golf track. A mature parkland that offers a little bit of forgiveness in some areas and punishes you severely in others. The key to scoring well here is to miss in the right areas and not get too greedy if you find yourself out of position.

The course is a moderate 6512 yards with a par of 71, and is designed by James Braid and his key characteristics can be seen throughout the 18 holes. Great use of the natural land undulations and contours and elevated tees and greens that slop back towards you.

The course was in wonderful condition and the fairways were a joy to play from with the rough being more punishing as you go through the defined cuts – which is exactly how it should be. The bunkers were mostly well stocked and soft, but with the odd compacted one thrown in [which we put down to some heavy rain the day before].

The greens were phenomenal. It is as simple as that. True, smooth and slick; they were an absolute pleasure to putt on and were as good as anything we have visited in 2017 – which includes some real stand out venues. This kind of surface can be tricky if you don’t get the pace of them quickly, but for those who do it can be confidence inspiring as you know that if you set the ball off on the correct line then it will find the bottom of the cup.

The stand out holes were the blind tee shot leading to a dog-leg and elevated green at the 9th hole. Then the beautiful way the holes are crafted into the land at 17 and 18 – which are two of the best finishing holes out there. Peter Alliss said it is in his Top 10 finishing holes and it’s hard to argue with that. The problem it poses, how best from a high tee, to carry a ravine of rough ground, water and sand to the green below, a green that is guarded on the left by an Oak tree. Sound tough? It is, but it’s wonderful.

The day offered good value. Saturday morning tee times in the summer with a snack before hand and a 2-course meal afterwards cost us £49 per person. The bar prices were fair and reasonable and the club house was as impressive inside as it was out. Staff were friendly, polite and courteous and the experience of dealing with the club before the visit was professional and timely.

In summary, we will be back to Lancaster Golf Club and we would recommend anyone to visit it. A brilliant venue that would well be worth considering for a day of golf or even a 1 or 2-night stay [which also offered tremendous value for money]. Get up there and have a look!

I played here on 12/08/17 with Bunkers Golf Society and I play off a handicap of 11.

The first thing to note about Lancaster GC is the impressiveness of the place on arrival. You are greeted by a grand old manor house/club house and the lush green practice areas and chipping greens. Its a superb greeting for any golfer and gets you in the mood for whats ahead.

The course is a lovely mature parkland layout that is quite tight in parts but also has areas where `you can miss and get away with it`. Playing the course with care can result in good scoring, but as with all courses the temptation to rely on the `big stick` can often bite you on the backside.

The condition of the course was superb, with carpet like fairways that were springy under foot and easy on the eye with their rolled stripes. The rough was cut into two distinct cuts, with the deeper being quite penal and tough - especially after a touch of rain.

The greens were the star of the show. They were slick and smooth, with subtle breaks and undulations. It became quickly apparent that you needed to miss short as going past the pin inevitably left down hill putt that was more slippery than a pocketful of custard. The "stimp" reading on these must`ve been pretty high and they were as quick and true as anything we have played on this season.

The day cost us £49 with Saturday tee times at 11am and included a bacon roll and tea/coffee, 18 holes followed by a 2 course meal. The food was cooked nicely and well presented by attentive staff in a private room and I believe the day offered good value for what we experienced.

In summary, Lancaster GC would be an ideal venue for society or individual golfers alike. It offers everything you would need and its impressive grandeur would be enough to leave any keen golfer wanting more.

I visited this well established traditional parkland lay out with a large group of pals from Bunkers Golf Society.
Expecting the course to be very heavy following some torrential recent rain we were very happily surprised to find it largely dry and firm underfoot with greens that remained slick and smooth throughout the round.
The breakfast roll and coffee beforehand was tasty and set us up nicely for the rigours ahead.
Service before and after our round was friendly and courteous.
We were fortunate that the weather was kind to us and apart from a short shower which lasted no more than ten minutes we remained dry and warm all day.
The castle/Manor House clubhouse was spacious and we were able to relax Ina private dining room to hold our prize presentation ceremony.
All prizes were generously donated by one of our society's main sponsors, Teeuplo.
There were several excellent rounds in amongst the usual rubbish but with prizes going to lads scoring 38, 39 and 41 points there was clearly scoring opportunities out there for everybody!
The day was excellent value and I am confident that we will be back again next year!

    I play off 19.
Played this course on 12th August 2017. weather conditions not too bad, cloudy but warm and a few light downpours throughout the round.
Lovely clubhouse and very nice practise area.
had bacon butty and coffee on arrival, very tasty. booked the society in with Tom who gave a good update on the course and helped with the nearest the pin holes etc.
onto the course, this is a great parkland course with a great layout, not too long and not too punishing if you stray off the fairway.
some holes stand out for me, the par 4 9th and the signature par 3 18th. This is a great finishing hole and one of the best signature holes i've played.
Fairways immaculate and greens very quick and true.
half way house stocked well with hot food available and reasonably priced.
2 course meal to follow was very nice with some good choices.
would definitely return to play this.

First visit to this wonderful course. Great variation of holes, long, short, blind, sloping. Greens were quick and rolled lovely. Course was very generous in terms of rough and not being penalised for going wide, but that can also be a criticism.

Stunning club house, only small criticism would be that the showers and locker room need updating.

Would definitely recommend playing this venue to anyone and would love to see it on our calendar in future years.

Played Lancaster Golf Club with the bunkers golf society in our final major of the season. Turning up at the course you can't help but be impressed with the club house a truly stunning building. The practice area is in great condition go have a putt before playing (trust me) ! There are nets by the pro shop to warm up the big muscles before the 1st tee shot. Onto the course tee boxes and fairways in great condition. Moving onto the greens they are awesome ! Quick and true just how we like them and the best I've played on all season. Some great holes and a pleasure to play ! Highly recommended

The SwingersGolf Society Open Major and what a course to play it on. Apart from walking away with the wooden spoon i cant fault the course in anyway, the greens was in excellent condition considering the rain they had that week. 18th Hole to finish the day off is a beauty. This will be on the calendar for next year.

Our society always love coming here. Last visited in June 2016. It is one of my personal favourites. The course is challenging but not too much. Green are always tip top, even in awful weather. Standing on the 18th tee is exhilarating. Facilities are great, practice area and driving range. But the best bit of all is the clubhouse - a proper castle!

Lancaster golf club visited 10th June 2016.
Always a great day out, the course is always in excellent condition as are the greens, however it doesn’t make the course any easier still a challenging course.
The club house/castle is great very quirky and trying to find your way to the gents changing rooms is like being in a labyrinth.
Again the catering side did not let the club down ….. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was excellent.
The only thing I can say is if you want all of the above you have to pay for it and it’s getting rather expensive.
