    22nd September 2014

We took the society to Leigh Golf Club on Sunday 21st September 2014. Having visited the club the year previous, it was voted by our members for a return in 2014 due to its friendliness of staff, warm welcome and lovely, mature, parkland course.

The club is nestled in a lovely part of Cheshire and is within easy reach of the M6 and M62 Motorways, making it an accessible club for most of our members. The first thing you notice about Leigh is that the drive from the main road to the club house gives you a glimpse of the well manicured fairways and a view to the impressive clubhouse.

It’s clear that this place has been in existence for a long time and that history is evident more so as you walk into the clubhouse and read the numerous former captains and champions listed on the walls. We were greeted by a very friendly club pro who booked us in and talked about the course and its current condition. We were told it had been ‘hollowtined’ shortly before our visit and as such the greens would not be as immaculate as the club had enjoyed throughout most of the year. From a distance the greens looked superb and we appreciate that for clubs to enjoy quality greens ‘in season’ there has to be some sacrifices in the ‘close season’.

We all met in the clubhouse and enjoy pre round drinks and snacks in a well presented room and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The pre round food was as good as anything we have had this year, and although it may only be a bacon roll [standard society fare] its surprising how many places get this simple item so badly wrong .

There is a well kept large practice green beside the clubhouse and the pace and quality of the green was a fair representation of the pace of the greens on the course. There is also a small pitching area/green with 4 flags to aim at and this was a nice way to warm the wedges up pre round. Two practice nets on the walk to the first tee allowed players to open their shoulders a little and get a feel for how the days play may pan out. A nice touch worth mentioning was the little bags that were available to take onto the course with ‘divot repair mix’ in them. This sets the impression that the club care about the condition of the course and it is a good way of encouraging players to help with maintaining this.

There is a practice range available, but we only saw this as we walked down the 1st and 2nd holes. It’s not too clearly marked from the club house and in order to access it, you would need to stroll across the 1st fairway and some 400 metres from the clubhouse – which isn’t ideal.

The course is a deceptive test of golf. The cards give the impression that it may be short and therefore quite easy, yet this is far from the case. Yes, there is only one par 5 on the car, but the clever use of the natural contours of the land and some superbly placed hazards and bunkers make the course play much harder than you would think. Several of the greens are quite small and very well protected, making accuracy paramount.

All of the tee boxes were flat and well kept and navigating around the course is reasonably easy due to good signage. The only tricky ones are the walk from 2 to 3 and 5 to 6 as you have to walk across other fairways to access them. It’s not a problem; it could just do with slightly better directions.

The fairways were nice and spongy under foot with a perfect length of grass to encourage confidence when going for the greens – which you invariably are doing on most 2nd shots. The mature trees that line the fairways add to the quality of the holes and several of them actually make holes look longer than they actually play due to the way the fairway meanders through them. The par 4 2nd hole is a lovely short hole that is packed with danger with a pond just before the elevated green and large bunkers just waiting to gobble up any wayward shots.

The greens were a point that a few members raised in the bar afterwards. As mentioned above, there has to be a compromise with greens and you cannot expect them to play ‘like glass’ for 12 months of the year. During our visit in early 2013 the greens were great and were true and fast – so it would be unfair to criticise the club purely because we have been unfortunate enough o visit shortly after they had been hollowtined. To be fair, 75% of the greens were still playing quite well with the only issue being the odd bobble and differences in pace between those greens that were surrounded by trees and those that were open to the sun and wind and were therefore harder and faster. The pace was therefore more of an issue than the trueness of roll.

There are only two criticisms from this visit. Firstly, that there was a lot of dropped leaves on some of the holes. Again, we appreciate that a parkland course is going to fall victim of this in the autumn. However, this looked to be a build up of leaves over a number of days and we would encourage the course to just occasionally try and rake or blow the leaves on some holes as it made locating balls difficult and in turn slowed the play slightly – this in particular on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes.

The second issue was with the bunkers. Some of them were very hard and compacted and made it difficult to ‘splash’ out of them and encouraged the club to ‘blade’ into the ball. You’d expect this if there had been rain in the build up to our visit, but there hadn’t been – it had been dry and quite warm in the days previous. A few people complained that due to the hard bunkers the ball did not collect back into the middle of the sand, instead bouncing and stopping in the sand. This meant on occasions, the ball would be wedged up against the back edges of the bunker and meaning you had to play out sideways and therefore lose a shot in doing so – not what you expect from the sand.

Overall, the course was in good condition – but not as good as earlier in the year, when we last visited. We would still visit it again as it’s a lovely track and a good test of golf. It also offers something different to a lot of other courses as it’s not all about ‘smashing the ball’ long distances. The friendliness of the staff and the warm welcome also go a long way and the negatives on this visit are unfortunate rather than neglect [maybe other than the bunker sand].
In summary, Leigh Golf Club is a wonderful course and club and is definitely worthy of anyone’s money. It’s reasonably priced, both for the golf and the food/drink and the hospitality of the club is admirable. We would be happy to go back again in 2015 and continue our affiliation with this lovely club.

We had an eventf here recently and as if never played it before I was really looking forward to the day. I wasn’t disappointed. The sunshine always helps but the corse was in great condition and the greens were immaculate. Course layout crosses over itself a few times but the holes are distinctive and a mixture of enjoyable, challenging and difficult. I’d certainly play this course again.

Society visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Leigh gol club. Society had never been before. First visit. However I had played once before and had recommended it.
Interesting course with some interesting holes. Some make you think first. The greens were in tip top condition. Swift and true rolling. Very impressed.

The course has a variety of holes from some tough Par 3s to some short but very tight Par 4s. The greens were pretty quick and in very good condition. The facilities are very traditional with a half way house serving a variety of refreshments. The food was a little basic but overall I would certainly revisit this course.

played here in mid october with the CSGS society and was very impressed by the course.
Fairways were excellent and the greens true and very quick for the time of year. Most holes make you think, not just a grab the driver and smash it course with plenty of bunkers and trees to cause you trouble.
The food we had was ok, nothing too special.
Will definitely be back here soon

Leigh Golf Club is a lovely course with a varied range of holes. The course is not overly long but what it lacks in length the greens make up for in spades. The day we played it the pin positions were in devilishly difficult locations. The greens were fast but not lightning fast thankfully, if they had of been the greens would have been unplayable.
Enjoyed the course and would be worth a second visit.

MGS played here mid july and the course should be praised for its wonderful variation of golf holes. The greens were immense, yet appeared to be made of Glass for me!

A few too many cross over holes for my liking, but the course ranked highly among our society, with our Captain rankimg it as one of our best 5 ever. Not bad considering over the years weve played 75+ different ones!

Had a fantastic Day at Leigh Golf Club on Friday for our Gentlemen's' Captain's Day Out.

Course was in great condition with lots of fun had on the fast greens by all the competitors. Although Members stated they were slowest they've been for a few weeks, everyone found them fast and true despite struggling with them. The 18th in particular being ruthless if you couldn't hold the ball high and right on the Green.

36 points winning showed how tricky it was despite not being the longest course around. You really have to think your way around rather than bashing a long ball all day. Trees often blocking out approaches meant that shots can be lost fairly easily if you don't position yourself correctly off the tee.

Only comment would be that the bunkers aren't the best I've seen this year. Felt some needed some more sand or a different style of sand in them as getting under the ball to splash out was difficult.

Hospitality and Food was excellent though. Most found the Bacon Barms, Sandwiches and Chips to be fine during the day. Carvery Dinner was excellent.

Facilities were plentiful in this old and historical building. Snooker table, Pro Shop & lots of Rooms in the large Clubhouse. Practice Nets, separate Chipping / Putting Green and Practice Ground (although a distance away) & importantly a multi hole accessible 'halfway' house outside and on the course.

The Interesting walk to the first Tee is something that is a little different to the norm but no problem at all and doesn't deduct anything from the Course.

Overall I would Highly recommend you give Leigh Golf Club a try whether on your own or taking a party of golfers for a full day out like we had. A very nice Course.

Played Leigh Golf club with Bunkers Golf Society on Sunday the 21st of September and had a superb day from the moment we entered the property. From the best post round Bacon Barm of the season with great hospitality thrown in we set off for the first tee. The course was in fantastic condition for late September and the greens although slightly bobbly after hollow tinning were nice and receptive which was a welcome change to some we have played throughout the year. Bunkers were fair and the rough penal. Look forward to going back again next year as it was nice to play around were you have to use all clubs in your bag and have some course management thrown in.

Leigh is a lovely parkland course positioned within easy reach of Liverpool and Manchester. It is not a long course but don't let the yardage printed on the cards fool you, there is a delicious mix of holes that will provide a good test for all standards of golfer.

The clubhouse gives an idea of how long the club has been there. A grand building littered with past captain photo's. The staff are welcoming and the pro shop is well equipped and friendly too.

Practice facilities are pretty good with putting and chipping areas, two nets and once you are on the course you notice a decent practice range.

The course on both occasions I have played has been well maintained. The tee boxes were flat and firm. Fairways were fluffy with firm base. The club ask you to take out a divot bag which is a nice touch.

Last time out the greens were better than we experienced on this day. Hollow tining rarely makes a golfer smile but it is a necessary evil and members assured me that the greens are normally much better and I suspect that this is true given the general condition of them.

There are no signature holes to speak of but 9 through 17 played over the road are probably the best stretch. The par three 12 playing downhill is lovely and the 16th played alongside the railway line is a knee trembler.

Overall Leigh presents itself as a friendly club with great value green fees and a decent challenge for all. I like it. Ratings are based on both rounds played as it would be unfair to demerit it purely on a dose of hollow tining.

I played here with bunkersgolf society in our first medal event 21/09/14.

This was my first visit to this course as i had missed it the previous year and much had been said about it, everybody that played it last year had said how impressed they were with the course.

Upon getting there i must say first impressions were fantastic, you see some of the course whilst driving in and it looked very green and lush.

The tee boxes were well manicured the fairways were nicely cut, my only criticism is that they could have used a leaf blower to remove the excess amount of leaves on some of the fairways.

I feel that this course was let down by the poor quality of the greens, they were bobbly and inconsistent with pace due to some of them being bone dry and others being spongey, quite a few times our group had puts jump offline due to these bumps.

This would definitely be a course i would play again and i would expect the greens to get sorted because this is a gem of a course and it would be a shame for them to be left in that standard.
