I was struggling with how to write this review so I`m going to use the same template as one of my fellow society members and write it in two parts.

I`m first going to talk about the course itself and the food served to us. We had a full English pre game and it was excellent. Served quickly, piping hot, plenty of items on the plate, just faultless to be honest. And the same can be said about the steak pie dinner and chocolate cake we had afterwards. Both meals were excellent, piled high and served with a smile.

The practice facilities here are ok, there`s a putting green but then everywhere has a putting green, and a practice range of around 150 yards with a few flags and bunkers.

The course is the real winner at Llanymynech! The course is truly fantastic from start to finish with no weaknesses. No two holes are alike, there`s plenty of elavated tee shots, blind tee shots, cracking par 3`s, thick forestry, the odd bit of water, very sandy and fluffy bunkers, panoramic views that are frankly breathtaking (your playing very high up a hill here), just everything you could ask for in a golf course. The condition is immaculate from start to finish and that`s tee boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers, rough, the lot! In parts the course has a slightly linksy feel to its fairways in the way they are lumpy and cut very tight. The back 9 is tougher than the front 9, much tighter and played into the prevailing wind. It was a 3 club wind at times when we played it.

Ok so the negatives, and there are negatives. I book the fixtures for our society and I book them around Oct-Dec for the following year. I booked this event, which was our Open Championship, in November 2015. I offered a deposit and was told not to worry about it for now as its too early and can`t be taken until January, call back a few months before your game and sort it. I then called again in April to reserve some buggies which was done successfully and was again told not to worry about a deposit, just leave it when you give the catering details in a week before. To cut a long story short, we had no booking. There was a massive cock up at their end and after much disagreement and a suggestion from myself we were just about still able to play, but had to tee off at 8:00 instead of 10:00 which meant a 5:30am start for some of our group.

I requested compensation and was given 2 fourball vouchers which is fair enough, except when they were given to me I was told "£200 worth there, you`ve done pretty well out of us".

Our first group had just teed off when someone came out of the clubhouse (I think he was a member) and asked us to change how we had parked some of our cars because they usually park in a different line. No signs of markings though. One lad did as we were asked but the others were already on the 1st green. One of our group were going to go up in the buggy and get the keys but I told him not to.

I was in the back group and had a 3 ball behind us who were also a society but a society that play almost all of their games at Llanymynech. None of our society had played the course before so we were enjoying the scenery, playing one of our biggest comps of the year, as well as working our way around a course we didn`t know. Needless to say, they were up our backsides all the way round but never actually encroached on us or requested to play through, something we would of allowed although they would of had 3 other society fourballs to get through. In the bar afterwards one of the group said to one of that 3ball what a lovely course you have here and your very lucky to be able to play it regularly. He got a reply of "yes it is nice if you play it fast enough" then went on about pace of play and told my mate that he hoped we liked the course and "don`t come back"!

We have been playing courses all over the place for over 6 years and have never ever been spoken to like this before. Nobody advocates slow play and we did take about 4hrs 40mins to get round which is slower than you would like , but there wasn`t really any looking for balls and we all played steady, it was just a case of being unfamiliar, trying to win a competition, playing a tough course in very tough conditions and enjoying the scenery.

I confronted the a**e hole in question as I won`t stand for anyone upsetting a member of out group like that and he played innocent and said it was taken out of context and please come back and play again. Yeah right.

The issue over the booking, which had me very stressed indeed, along with the parking none sense and our friend in the clubhouse left me in a rage over Llanymynech for about 4 days afterwards.

I would absolutely go back to Llanymynech but just to play the course because it is a cracker, but I wouldn`t spend a single extra penny in the club, which looks like a crumbling 1970`s primary school, and I would be in the car after leaving the 18th as fast as my legs would carry me. And I would park in the wrong direction, just for fun.

Great course with some of the best views for miles! Tee boxes were flat and in great condition. Parts of thr fareways were better than some greens we've played on this year, and the green were fast and true! Personally I had a nightmare on them but they were in great shape! Had a full English before our game which was hot and tasty. Then steak pie with chips and peas after washed down with a pint. Even with an unhappy player from another society causing grief in the clubhouse wouldnt put me off coming back here again!

We`ve been fortunate to play some good courses this year, and Llanymynech was in my top 3.

I am going to split this review in to 2.

First the course and catering staff. I loved the course, some fantastic holes, greens in great condition and views to die for (in fact if you stepped too far back off the 12th tee you would die due to what looked like a 100ft sheer drop!). Yes there were a few blind tee shots but that adds to a course for me, even a first timer. Next time I play it, (if I play it as you will read in the 2nd half review) then I would be better informed.
I did think there would be more made of the 4th where you drive off in Wales but putt out in England. I didn`t see anything obvious whereas when you come back from England into Wales there was a "Welcomes to Wales" in Welsh sign! But I won`t hold that against them. The cooked breakfast, and the meal after were excellent as were the staff who were very accommodating. Could not do enough for us. Clubhouse was dated but I guess this course hasn`t a large membership to fund improvements, and why courses like this surely rely heavily on societies like ours.

Part 2 - we bent over backwards to make this fixture. We had booked over 10 months ago yet the course failed to record the booking. All this meant a very very early start (5:40am for some) to get to the course as they said we could still play but a far earlier tee time than we had booked.
To be advised 10 mins after our first group had teed off that we had parked in the wrong direction was a bit unnecessary but again we complied and moved the cars we could (maybe a big sign with PARK THIS WAY would help). Then when we finished our rounds a "gentleman" complained about how long we had taken. Lets put this into context - none of us had played here, it was very very windy, there are blind tee shots, we were all in 4 balls, it was our Major, we took no longer than 4.5 hours. He then uttered the immortal "you are not welcome here". He wasn`t even a member we found out later but someone who plays there with his society regularly. I am not quite sure how well the Club, who probably survive because of society income, would view a non member talking like this and quite frankly deterring future visits by other societies because of the unwelcome attitude.

Upon arrival no clear indication which way to park our cars, several had to be moved just before our T off. Practice green gave a true indication difficulty of the greens on course. Course, tough but fare, a few blind shots, need to take care to read the map holes which are at each hole, great inclusion for first time players. Overall apart from a few holes would put in my top five courses played this year. 19th food good, bar staff pleasant, other golfers in clubhouse must not of played new courses in difficult conditions.

I was expecting a lot from this course after watching the promotional video, and in many ways it lived up to the hype I'd built up, but in some it fell short.

The condition of the course is exceptional. Neat, flat tee boxes with a map of each hole including distances, well looked after fairways in great condition, thick unforgiving rough and near perfect greens that were very difficult to read. The views are incredible, and you really are playing next to huge cliff edges at times, but too often the views are hidden and it occasionally feels like every other parkland course. A few great holes, a few not so great. Overall i enjoyed the course but too often i felt confronted by a blind shot with no idea where i should be aiming.

I would play here again if given the opportunity, but wouldn't go out of my way to have a game here. Its a good course in great condition, but not quite a great course.

Its a hard one this because i really want to praise this club because the course is absolutely stunning from the scenery to the position of the tee's this course is just exceptional a must for any golfer. That being said the attitude of the staff not the bar/kitchen staff they were amazing but the fact that we had booked this nearly 12 months before and rang up to confirm buggies months before we were due to play all ok and then the week before to give them food requirements only to be told they have no booking for us and not a single bit of apology just a free couple of 4 ball vouchers and to be told you did well out of us is a disgrace. Also to be had a go at in the club house about slow play when we played 4 four balls in 5 hours in a course we dont know is just a piss take apart from the bar/kitchen staff this club needs to take its head out of its arse because from the outside it looks like a run down school so its not THAT good needs updating so does there attitude ! Would i go back maybe for the course but i wouldn't be hanging around afterwards !!!!

I joined Llanymynech as a member in1964 when it was a 9 hole course & only gave up membership 4 years ago when my bionic knees could not cope with the hilly terrain. The course is unique in that it may be the only one which has 15 holes in one country (Wales) & 3 in England.
Had some great times there over the years playing in many Competitions & club matches with so many friends.
Even when the Golf was not too good the views are always fantastic.

What a wonderful course hidden away in the England/Wales borderlands.

The course is a mix of tough short holes that require accuracy and thinking with the odd great driving hole with large dips and elevated greens.

The course was in amazing condition with greens being true. The views are amazing and that par 3 over the gorge is just terrifying.

Clubhouse is traditional but very welcoming and I can't wait to go back.
