The Royal Oak Society Open Championship is our second and arguably most prestigious major competition of the season, and this year it brought us to Manchester Golf Club.

This competition marked a very welcome first for us, and that was our first sponsored competition! We really cant thank the wonderful people at teeuplo enough for their generosity with us throughout this season and in particular in sponsoring our Open Championship.

Thanks teeuplo, you guys really are the Albatross on the SI 1 Par 5!!!

Manchester Golf Club, often referred to as Hopwood, sits just past a " Welcome to Rochdale " sign in Greater Manchester. The course has hosted allsorts of high level tournaments over the years, their website gives good insight into the history of the club.

The first thing that hits you is the historic feel of the place, something that surrounds you with the style of buildings and from the bits of the course that you can see. And as with other prestigious courses that have been around for over 100 years, they really know how to make you feel welcome!

The pro Brian was milling about as we were arriving and took the time to have a friendly chat with us all, a very genuine bloke giving us a very genuine and warm welcome, nothing forced or commercial about it what so ever.

As the group started gathering the Tea and Coffee was plentiful along with big thick and juicy bacon barms. The bar manager took me to one side and went through the day we had ahead of us. They advised that we were now members for the day and have reserved for us a large table in the members only lounge in front of the TV so we can watch the footy post round while we eat our meal, and as we are members for the day have full use of the facilities such as the snooker tables. A very nice touch and something that lacks in so many places, and places of a lower stature than Manchester Golf Club.

We finished breakfast and ran through the order of the day before heading off in various groups to get practicing. There is everything you need here to get warmed up. There's an indoor putting lab, 18 hole putting green, 2 practice bunkers, chipping area, outdoor grass and covered driving range and probably more that I didn't get to see. I went for the range. A word of note, if you decide to use the range, try and go down to it in a buggy or even your car, because its a long walk their and back! You almost start thinking that you must be going the wrong way to it!

The 1st hole is a cracking par 4 played from an elevated tee, a great driving hole! Your then hit with back to back par 5's, very unusual for so early in the round. The 3rd is a par 5 where if you blister a drive long enough you can catch the huge downslope in the fairway and end up just a 7 iron from the green, a reasonably eagle opportunity even for us rank amateurs! All of the par 3's here are memorable and challenging. The first par 3 is the 4th, played about 180 yards downhill over a brook.

My round started to unravel on the short par 4 5th, sitting nicely on 8 points after 4 holes I got a cracking drive away to leave myself 80 yards to the green, then sliced a lob wedge square right into the woods and took 4 to get back out!

The 6th is the SI 1 and a damn tough hole. You tee off blind over a hill of thigh high jungle with just a marker post visible. When you get up there the hole falls slightly away to the left and its OOB all down the right. A rare pond sits on the left side of the fairway to catch slightly wayward shots into the green. A long and tough hole!

They don't get any easier as the course starts its climb up the Lancashire hills.

The 13th is the signature hole on the course and a tends to be the hole that's pictured in all magazine and web reviews of this course. A beautiful par 3 that looks longer than its yardage, the hole drops away from your feet before rising back up to a plateau green where anything other than on the dance floor is trouble. Our captain hit a once in a lifetime shot here, almost holing out from the tee!

A slightly disappointing aspect of this course, but this really is being picky, is the 18th green being nowhere near the clubhouse. There's a certain charm about playing into the 18th green with other members of your group watching on! But don't let this put you off!

Your surrounded by perfection here. Tee boxes are perfect, greens are perfect, fairways and bunkers are perfect, everything about the course is perfect! This course is also unusual in that hardly any of the holes are parallel to each other. You rarely see another fairway on your way round. The signature 13th is on a huge piece of land on its own, and the acreage that this course covers must be huge! There also didn't seem to be many people playing here apart from a few women, very strange for a lovely Sunday morning on a course like this but made it a stress free day for us!

We retreated to the clubhouse for our post game meal in the members lounge and were treated to a delicious slab of home made steak pie and chips. This chunk of pie was about 4 inches thick and literally bursting with thick juicy pieces of steak! The chips, peas and gravy were also plentiful and as a testament to the portion of food hardly anyone finished it!

The feeling after the game was unanimous in that we had just spent the day in a very special place. Not a negative about anything between us. Some said it was the best course they had ever played.

That a place like Manchester Golf Club can make a society feel so welcome and not just like a cash cow is a thing to be admired and something that many other courses should take note of. And its all genuine, not forced or behind gritted teeth.

Played Manchester for the first time on Sunday 26 March. What an amazing golf course. It has fantastic views of peak district and surrounding countryside. The course isn't for the faint hearted, it has some testing holes but the layout of the course is so impressive it was a real pleasure and BIG THANK YOU to Steve , for making our society (Astoria golf society) really welcome. Hopefully we'll be back there again.

Manchester was a great day out from start to finish. We were given a warm welcome by the helpful staff in the Pro shop, same by the Manager inside the clubhouse were there was a placard welcoming players from Astoria golf society. The Members actually stopped, wished us good morning and asked if we needed any help. That was fantastic as a lot of courses simply do not generate that feeling of actually wanting you there as visitors. As for the Course it is beautifully laid out with some cracking views. It was very dry considering recent weather and we played off grass tee boxes apart from one hole. The Greens had been worked on but that will show reward come the Summer time and is to be expected at this time of year. There were some roped off areas but again, rewards will be reaped later in the year. This course is a must visit for the Summer and would be exceptional once the weather allows the Green staff to cut and manicure it properly.

First time that I have played Manchester golf club and throughly enjoyed my experience even with the harsh wet conditions we had to endure throughout our game . This course is a real test with a great variety of holes, the tees, fairways and greens was better than most courses I have played .
All in all this is a superb all round venue for a days golf with cracking facilities,I would definitely recommend and look forward to returning here again sometime in the future .

for the second time in 2 years we held one of our majors at Manchester. The whole place is just magnificent along with the people who work and are members here.

It`s got the lot, brilliant practice facilities including a rare grass driving range with no mats, wonderful old fashioned clubhouse steeped in history going back to the 1800`s, amazing staff who treat you like your the only people there that matter, and then you have the course itself!

I suppose you would class this as a parkland or heathland course, but whichever it is it`s a wonderful golfing experience. There`s so much to say that I could go on forever, but if you like courses with varied holes, changes in elevation and holes that aren`t all parallel to eachother you really need to get yourself on here!

The standard green fee is possibly a touch too expensive but you can get good deals to play here.

Our post game meal was taken in "the chapel" a charming room with a feel of a Masons meeting room about it!

There was a downside to our visit, the weather. Terrible rain for about 2 hours that flooded the greens to the point where they were practically unplayable. Not the courses fault of course, they dried out very quickly when the rain stopped and they even provided squeegies on every green to help clear the water.

If you get the chance to play here for £40 or less do it, it`s a bit more than what you would pay at many other courses but this is well, well worth it!!

See you soon Manchester Golf Club!

We were due to play one of our mayors of the year here. So I arrived early to hit a few balls on the range and practice green. Both were brilliant. They even have 2 chipping greens with bunkers and various pins.
The course lived up to its expectations until the rain set in. After around 15 minutes of heavy rain the greens became unplayable. Pools of standing water littered across the greens ruined my round and score!! Squeegees were provided on every hole to remove the water but by the time you cleared it and picked up your putter it was flooded again! The fairways and tee boxes held up great with the weather shame about the greens! Back at the clubhouse we had a steak pie and chips with veggies and a few beers. The hospitality was great and facility's some of the best around just the weather wasn't on our side!

Fantastic course layout and always in beautiful condition from tee to green. Superb practice facilities from the driving range to two chipping areas with practice greens.
Members very welcoming as are the clubhouse staff. Brian the club professional is very friendly and accommodating (he even kindly took time out to quickly adjust my wedges before my round when he was already busy)
Always an all round good day here, come and play this course you will love it. Top marks from me, I hope this stays on our fixtures list for next year.

    Updated review

Not much more to add to my previous review, this course is a cracker, play it. We were unlucky with the weather this time, got to the 9th tee and the heavens opened. We chose to continue playing rather than come in and suffered for a few holes, i must say i was surprised the greens dried up as much as they did after such a downpour. Great course, great venue, great facilities, polite and friendly staff and members, first class golf.

What can i say this course is one of my personal favourites the members are fantastic very welcoming i drove to the course straight from work so was erm a little early so wasn't really open but a couple of members turned up let me in through the members door showed me around gave me a few tips about the course and when one of our members turned up at a reasonable hour he went to the pro shop to get a price on some club adjustments and they did it for free outstanding a real credit not just to the club but to whole game. Now the course, what started out as a nice warm morning everybody was running on adrenaline as this was our MASTERS. Everybody started off not to shabby some good shots (as to be expected as full use of the driving range in the next town was utilized) ok maybe not the next town but its a fair old walk. The course is in stunning condition with some tough holes bunkers and rough a plenty but then disaster struck with the heavens opening to what can only compare to Noah (if you believe that shit) but anyway no club in the world could of handled that much rain expected the club house to go floating past at one point no exaggeration it was horendous. Anyhoo that aside because i don't feel the club should suffer from this review and having played it before i know what it has to offer and as i said before one of my favourites i strongly recomend this course to anybody (just check weather before hand)

This course is one you must visit. Simple. The course is massive, there aren't many holes next to each other as you meander about the place. The tees, the greens, fairways, everything is fantastic. Super practice facilities also.

Alas our day was spoilt by biblical rain that Noah would have been proud of. The greens were unplayable, as were some fairways. To be fair to the course they did advise us to come in, wait for the better weather (which took around 2 hours to come) - we couldn't do that so persevered. It was a real shame as the 9 holes I played without the rain showed what a quality place this is. There are squeegees by most greens if you could be bothered.

Hospitality was brill - the rain delayed us somewhat but the staff were very accommodating and just waited our prompt.

Recently played this course with the Bunkers Golf Society and what a fabulous day we had on a beautiful sunny. we started are day with a drink and a bacon roll. Some of the society purchased some balls and headed to the range, i my self head to the short game area, which was in good condition. Onto the course, the fairways where in good condition, the greens where a bit uneven. But like all other courses this year, they are bit behind with the wet winter. Some great holes await you. I would certainly recommend it for a visit and hope it is on our fixture list next year. Thank you Manchester Golf Club for having us.

I played here as part of Bunkers Golf Societies visit.

The course is a lovely, mature layout with plenty of variety in the holes. The course was in nice condition with well defined fairways and bunkers that, if anything, had slightly too much sand in them.

The one downside, and it seems to be the case everywhere, is that the horrendous weather we have endured meant the greens were not as smooth and as true as you would expect from a venue of this quality. Still, i'm sure that it's a matter of time before this is rectified as the course enjoys better weather.

Well worth a visit and i'm sure we will return again next year.

Played here 15th May with Bunkers Golf Society. Very enjoyable, value for money course with a challenging layout ranging from some blind tee shots to some tricky par 3s. The mix of moorland and parkland makes it quite unique and pleasant with wild deer crossing some fairways. The only slight downside, as with most courses this late into the year given one of the wettest winters, was the greens were a bit bobbley but the pace was consistent and layouts varied. The hospitality was great and friendly as were some members I spoke to. I'll certainly be back.

I played Manchester GC as part of Bunkers Golf Society on 15th May 2016 on what was a lovely sunny day.

First thing to say about Manchester GC is that it is a wonderful layout whereby the course is cut beautifully into the naturally undulating land. The holes are all very different and there none that I can recall as being `up and down` or straightforward.

There are some standout holes where you look out from the tee box and think "what a great looking hole that is" and most of the holes you play in isolation without seeing the any of the other holes - which is something that only usually happens on top venues that are spread over huge expanses of land, or some of the better hotel complex courses.

The facilities at the club are superb with a nice pitching and chipping area as you drive in, and a large putting green. There is a great grass and covered driving range area - but be warned its a hike from the 1st tee [a good 10 minute walk and you`d be better driving to it in your car].

For our visit the greens weren`t up to the standards I am sure the club aim to set. As with a lot of places in 2016, they are some 8-10 weeks behind where they would hope to be due to the horrible, record bracingly wet winter we endured. However, I have to be honest and say that they are one of the most inconsistently paced I`ve played on this year. Some where super slick and quick and others were longer grass and slow - couple this with a bobbly surface and it was 3-putt central!!! We spoke with various members at the club and they assured us that normally the greens are much better but that they were a concern to them how far behind they are for a May.

The fairways were well kept and defined and the healthland/moorland course is very easy on the eye. The bunkers were a little overstocked in places, with deep fluffy dry sand meaning that if balls trickled into them they weren`t feeding into the middle and you often had lies right up against the face of them and partially `submerged`.

In terms of value, we paid £37 for a 10am tee time on a Sunday with bacon rolls and coffee - so not too bad. The clubhouse was also fairly priced and all the staff were warm and welcoming.

In summary, I`d like to go back to Manchester Golf Club later in the year and see if the greens were just a reflection of the poor winter. The layout of the course alone makes it worth a visit and if it was a slightly windier day, I would imagine scoring would be at an absolute premium as the difficulty of the course would be doubled due to its elevated position.

Played here on Sunday 15th May with the Bunkers Golf Society, having not heard very much about the course before I was coming to play with a far more open mind.

The hospitality from the club and pro shop was superb staff and members were friendly and helpful with all aspects of the club.

The course has lots of varying holes stretching out over an area that you could probably fit 3 golf courses in, hence we weren't surprised to see a few deers running across the fairways throughout the round.

The only downside of the course unfortunatley were the greens which were slow and quite bobbly, which in comparison with the rest of the course didn't quite fit, however i'm sure this will change very shortly once cut and rolled.

Lastly if you are planning on using the range before playing i suggest driving to the range as it's a good 10 minute walk which nearly caught a few out thinking they could hit a quick bucket before their tee time.

Great course will definitley be back.

Played here Sunday 15th May 2016 as part of Bunkers Golf Society day. Nice, hearty bacon sandwich on arrival and decent cup of coffee. Well stocked club shop for the in-round refreshments (basics like drinks, chocolate etc) and what looked to be a decent amount of shelf stock in terms of golf gear (didn't shop too much as spent enough last season). The course itself was in very good condition, greens were firm and in great condition pleasing to the eye, the fairways were definable and the rough was not too punishing although a little further in and you can spend a little time searching but that is your own fault for being off line right?! There are a few blind holes from tee positions that require keen ears to listen out for bell ringers, there are a few hills which get the heart rate going too but all in all it is a very pleasant course that appeals to all ranges of handicappers.

I can imagine this course being a really difficult challenge when the winds are up as it is high up in the hills and whilst we had a day of minimal wind and maximum sunshine (note to self - take sun tan lotion!), if the wind picked up it would take a decent golfer with a good range of shots in his/her bag to score well.

Would recommend the course and would play again!

    Thanks for having us.

Royal Oak Golf Society- Sunday 6th September Manchester Golf Club. Great start post code straight to course, then met a friendly lady member on a crisp morning start, before finding our way to the clubhouse. Staff polite willing to help, bacon butty and hot drink to start, then used the excellent practice facilities, before teeing off on the 1st, the next 17 holes where just as good, course very good condition, views great when watching others play well. Only a couple of holes where tee boxes close to Greens, when playing society golf this can lead to few shouts of 4! Overall very good day, enjoyed the course one of the best I have played in 2015, think if a windy day the course would play more difficult than the challenge it is on a sunny day, Peter B

What can i say this has to be one of the best courses i've played on it is an absolute must to play here i have nothing bad to say about any of it i felt like they opened up the course just for us as we never saw another team on there and it is imaculate a big big applause to the grounds team a credit to the club to keep that standard on such a vast course. I bought a course planner and when you look through at each hole they look so easy and boring but i can assure you they are far from it from elevated tees to blind tees each hole is different and a descent drive is required on most just so you can see the pin or the deep bunkers around them. The views were stunning from the tees to the girl in the pro shop and the man verses food dinner after a massive piece of homemade steak pie which not all finished was just what was needed to end what was a fantastic day.

I`m sure like me, before you visit a course, you read the reviews to get a feel. Everyone pretty much raved about this course. I have to say, I now understand why.

The layout is amazing. You walk down the 2nd, and you think "how do we get over there", as the course meanders up and down on its way. You hardly see other holes or golfers.

The tee boxes, fairways, greens, everything was immaculate. If you strayed, you found trouble but we found our balls most of the time although you would have to take your medicine.

There are superb warm up facilities - 2 chipping/bunker areas with green either side of the entrance road, and a large putting green. There is also a driving range about 5 mins walk.

The pre-game bacon butty was good, but the post-game pie and chips was superb, including the best gravy I`ve tasted. The clubs and its staff were welcoming and hospitable. A credit to the club.

Yes, you will pay a bit more to play a course of this stature, but you know what, it`s worth it. Too many times have I played a course that is up and down, mundane etc, for say £20, but to pay that bit more and get the quality here is worth it. We will be back.

This has long been a favourite of mine - a mature rolling moorland/heathland course which is invariably in great condition with lovely greens.

Set on undulating terrain, there is an agreeable mixture of holes, with the par 3s probably being the most memorable, particularly on the back 9.

Quite a demanding walk, but well worth the effort.
