Played here on 13th July. The best time to play any of these riverside courses. GPS didn't find the course until the 11th, preferring to link up to Withington at times. Didn't really spoil the enjoyment however & already booked a return for next August! Facilities & staff were also fine.

I visited Northenden Golf Club last week and to be honest the weather in the days leading up to it wasn't great. However, for the most part the course played pretty well. There's no doubt it was damp in places and there were poolings of water - but hey, this is February.

Its hard to accurately score a club that doesn't have a clubhouse or its usual bustling facilities, and in the case of Northenden it is through absolutely no fault of its own - and credit to them for even being in a position to accept members and guests. But despite this, I have to provide a score relative to the facts and at this moment in time the club clearly can't accomodate groups as they would ideally like to given the last of hospitality facilties at their disposal.

Now on to the golf.....

The layout is pleasant and is not dissimilar to its close neighbour Didsbury Golf Club in the sense that the course has the river running around it at most points and the flat parkland is easy on the legs with most of the trouble coming from bunkers and tree lined fairways that would pose a different test when in the full bloom of summer as opposed to the bareness of winter.

Special mention needs to be given to the greens and greens staff because these dancefloors are RED HOT!!! For a wintery February, these were as fast and smooth as a lot of clubs will achieve in mid summer. They were truly a joy to play on at this time of year and are worth the very reasonable £15 green fee alone.

I can see that this track would be quite beautiful when the greenery comes back to life and that the course would pose an entirely different test to the one I experienced. However, this is not a criticism of winter golf at Northenden - more a general observation of how 99.9% of parkland courses will be in the colder months.

I will have to pop back in June or July and run my beady eye over the course when its coming into its prime - as I suspect it will be a belter.

But in finishing - to support the club back to where it belongs and deserves to be, they need guests to keep on visiting, even if there is no clubhouse facility. Support your local clubs peeps!!!
