I played Portsalon GC in early April and the course was in great shape for so early in the year. Unfortunately the weather was the worst I have ever played golf in but it was clear to see how good this course really is. Brilliant links course in an amazingly scenic setting. The food is also superb in the clubhouse.

A True Links Test

The society visited this wonderful links course set along the Donegal Coast with views that would make you wish you had left the clubs at home and just brought the camera with you.
We didn't exactly pick the best conditions to play in with 50+mph winds, hail, rain and shine and even a small flurry of snow to contend with. It made swinging the club and staying upright a challenge. It was of no surprise that the staff in the pro shop just laughed at us when we arrived!
The staff were friendly and helpful both in the shop and the restaurant afterwards.
The Pro Golfer playing along with us commented on the first tee that this course in these conditions will teach you some manners and he wasn't far wrong.
This is a true links in every sense of the word with undulating fairways, fast double greens featuring steep run offs and rough that you just don't venture into should you miss the tight dune lined fairways. There wasn't a single 'easy' hole on this course with each being different than the next. Every hole on this course could be a signature hole anywhere else.
My favorite was the long Par 4 2nd with elevated tee shot over the beach and 2nd shot with a river to content with. Laying up short at a Par 4 seems ridiculous but unless you can draw your drive 300 yards of the tee a lay up would be the shot of choice.
I don't know whether we were delirious due to the weather but we all came off the course with huge grins.
Food and service in the restaurant was truly top notch. They don't normally serve food on a tuesday so had come into work especially for us now that's true Irish Hospitality.
There is no doubt we will come back to this beautiful course again soon and just hope the weather is more favorable.
