Preston Golf Club, a must play Lancashire gem, is situated in the Fulwood District of Preston. It was established in 1892 and modified by famous designers such as James Braid, Harry Vardon, Alistair Mackenzie and Sandy Herd over the years. It is a very testing parkland course where water hazards, tree-lined fairways and about 75 bunkers provide many challenges to play to your handicap.

Added to this are excellent dining and drinking facilities in the Clubhouse, a very well-stocked pro' shop and a 16 bay, 250 yard flood-lit driving range where you can warm up before beginning your round

We took Bunkers Golf Society to visit Preston Golf Club on 28th June 2015. We’d never been before but had heard positive reviews and were told it was a good test for all abilities. Talk about an understatement! The course is beautiful and is certainly a stand out from lots of the ‘run of the mill’ tracks that are out there. The first thing to note is that there are some great facilities on hand, with a driving range, pitching area, practice ground and putting green all well presented. The clubhouse is impressive and offers lovely views back over the course with reasonable prices and good service. These views of the 18th green and 1st tee whet the appetite as you can clearly see that this place is going to be good. The greens look immaculate and play better and for us, this is the main feature of any golf course. If the greens are smooth and consistent then it offers the golfer the chance to play confidently and shoot a good score. Preston’s were smooth, slick and extremely consistent throughout – and the practice green was a true reflection of the course [which often isn’t the case]. Subtle undulations and breaks make them a real challenge, and you need to sharpen to them quickly before they start ruining your card. We’ve played on some superb greens in the last couple of years and these are right up there with the very best around. Within that list we are including Royal Liverpool/Birkdale, Hillside and Gleneagles. Fine company I think you’ll agree? With such strongly regarded greens you may expect to find that the course does not live up to them – as is often the case, it does tend to be one or the other unless you are visiting the premium venues in the UK. However, Preston excels in course design and layout and every turn offers you something different. The course is undulating [and this should be noted for those with poorer mobility as a buggy may be the way to go] but these variations land make for some extremely unique holes, which are as aesthetically pleasing as they are challenging. The course is designed into the landscape fabulously and the natural contours of the land are used to provide some very tricky holes that may look short on the card, but play entirely different. There are elevated tee boxes and elevated greens. Holes with water hazards just before the green and brooks and ravines that run across fairways. Holes with huge elevation changes to the green [both uphill and downhill] and a couple of blind shots thrown in for good measure. All in all, it’s fair to say that every hole at Preston Golf Club offers something different. It was a round where you came off and there were lots to talk about in the clubhouse with our members chatting about various hole layouts and how they played them different – which we think is superb as it gets people engaging enthusiastically about the days play. Multi level fairways and greens, the ball lying above, below and high and lower than your feet – it certainly tests a players creativity as well as ability and although this may all sound a bit too much for some – it really is lovely to play a parkland course that provides something a bit different to just straightforward lies. The fairways were all well maintained and well-defined form the rough – which was fluffy and just punishing enough to make you want to avoid it. If you went badly off line, you were in thick over growth for the most part and there were few holes that allowed for wild shots. Accuracy is paramount, and making sure you are on or close to the fairway is the order of the game here. The bunkers were as well maintained as any I’ve played. No hard, nor fluffy and difficult sand. Just well stocked and raked so that they were a pleasure to play from. It may sound like a small thing, but the rakes used throughout the course were great as the natural weight of them made sure that the bunkers could be returned to their previous state with ease and you could tell that they weren’t the ‘cheapo’ material that some places settle for – you get what you pay for! Tee boxes were all flat and well kept and there were no issues raised at any point throughout the round. Post round we retired back to the clubhouse to enjoy a few beers and talk our way back through the 18 holes. It’s a course we would love to re-visit year on year and we hope to be able to forge a lasting partnership with going forward as it certainly ticks every box for a club we look for at Bunkers Golf Society.

Played on 23rd April 2017. Preston is a beautiful course and a warm welcome always has been given to our Society. The course is undulating and is quite a tough walk. The layout is fantastic with ditches, dog legs, two tier greens, elevated tees and streams. You really have to plot your way around. The course was in fantastic condition and a credit to the Green staff. Fairways and aprons were striped up beautifully while the tee boxes and greens were the best we have played on at this early stage of our season. The greens were fast and true with some really testing putts depending on your approach play. This is a brilliant course all round and in my opinion, a must play. We will return as long as Preston will have us. Thanks to all at the course for another great day.

Played here with bunkers golf society 28/8/16

With having played this course last year and it being one of the highlights of the year, i was very much looking forward to my round again. Despite the heavy rain the day before our visit you could tell the greenkeepers had done all they could prior to the rain and the course played as good as it could have played. There were a few wet patches around the greens and a few tee boxes but nothing could have prevented that being the case. The greens were in superp condition again and rolled very true. Preston is a suprisingly hilly course and it provides some beautiful views overlooking some holes, if you have the chance to play i would 100% recommend playing this course. The only thing that did bug me was the short par 3 on the back 9 was off a winter mat, im sure there is a reason behind it but not what you expect for £55 in the summer. Would 100% like to play here again.

Just played this course with the Bunkers golf Society on 27-8-16. This a beautiful course to play, elevated tees, greens sat on top of hills, some holes quite flat, it offers something for everyone in a beautiful parkland setting. Despite the over night thunder storms, the course took it all well, with only a few wet patches. The course had been very well prepared for our visit. The added benefit of a driving range, a well laid out practice area and a well stocked golf shop adds to the overall experience. The food and staff were excellent. I look forward to playing this course again.

I visited Preston Golf Club with Bunkers Golf Society on 28th August 2016 - and this is my 2nd visit to the club.

Once again, the course was in fabulous condition and this is great credit to the ground staff as we had endured some horrific weather in the days leading up to our visit - with the course being closed on one day I believe.

The greens were in great condition, a little soft in parts but a true and smooth role and very receptive. The general condition of the course is fabulous and well looked after and you can see that the club takes great pride in the appearance of all 18 holes.

The layout is very interesting with a large number of the holes being built in to the natural undulations in the land and this can mean its a bit tough on the legs - and I would recommend those of more senior years, or poorer mobility, should look to hire a buggy.

There are some stunning holes with elevated tees and greens and this affords great views over the course - which is a mature and very green parkland track.

At £55 for 18 holes, a full breakfast on arrival and 1 course meal afterwards it isn't the cheapest venue around - but you do get what you pay for. Ideally, I would like it to come in more between £45-£50 but in comparison to other courses in this price bracket it does hold up well. Prices in the bar are reasonable, the food quality was great [and plentiful] and the staff were all polite and attentive.

Definitely a course I would recommend you to visit.

Played here with bunkers golf society on 27/6/15.

I had heard good things about this course but never got round to playing it, what a suprise it was. The course was in wonderful condition without a fault i could see. Tee boxes, fairways, greens were immaculate. The different cuts in the fairway that you can see when on the tee look stunning.
On the card this course looks like a short one but dont be fooled it is fantastically set up and defended, position is key and sometimes leaving the driver in the bag for accuracy is a must.
If you havent played here before i suggest a trip down there you will not be disappointed

I attended with the Bunkers Golf Society and thoroughly enjoyed this course.
Beautiful course with very scenic holes.
But the best part about this course was without doubt the greens. They was immaculate and so true. Credit to the club. I don't often give 9/10 for greens, but this deserved such.
I will certainly play this course again and without doubt recommend it.

Me and the society I am in had an event here on the Sunday just gone.
Preston is a golf course that has never ever even crossed my radar before, and boy have I been missing out.
The facilities are fantastic, a lovely driving range with targets and flags, pro shop with all your needs, the best bacon butty I've had this year (which is good because I've had a few!) and so much more.
The course itself is demanding, the greens were super slick, the quickest I've played since the royal Liverpool on the Monday after the open in 2006. What helps though is the practice putting green is a true reflection of the course which is quite rare.
Add to this a separate grass chipping area and you can really get a feel for the place before teeing up.
The course is tight and tricky, very undulating, elevated tees and greens, dog legs, water, bunkers.
It's a true test of golf and one where I myself left the driver in the bag. On a lot of holes a 3iron off the tee left me in a good enough position to attack the tricky greens with a short iron.
All in all, I cannot recommend this golf club enough, if you're in the area, go and play it, you won't regret it.
It was also refreshing to see the course manager and green keeper active on Twitter to congratulate me on my win there.
Brilliant course, great staff, good facilities.
Thank you Preston, see you again soon!

I played here with Bunkers Golf Society on 28/07/2015.

Upon arrival we were met by friendly staff who served us a delicious bacon Sandwich before play.

The course is just fantastic, elevated tees and elevated greens galore. It really keeps you thinking about club selection and accuracy is paramount.
Most courses have a standout signature hole, it would be very difficult to pick out a standout hole on this course, so many of them were just fantastic.
The greens were extremely smooth and very, very fast.

We will be visiting this course again, i have no doubt.

Played here on 28 June with Bunkers and was very impressed with the quality of the course. A bit hilly and would probably use a buggy on my next visit. Superb greens which are very easy to three putt and a real thinking mans course! I would recommend this course to any one who wants a challenge.

Played this course on the 28/06/2015 with the Bunkers Golf Society. The course is one of the best parkland courses i've played, quite an easy opening par 3 leads you into a false sense of security and the true nature of the course is revealed. Every hole is different with challenging tee shots and varying drops and rises to the greens. The greens were in fantastic condition quick and true, what more can you ask for? After the round the bar over looks the 1st tee and 18th green providing a good place to sit and watch the golfers finish their rounds. Staff in the pro shop and clubhouse were friendly, if you haven't played this course I would recommend you book as you won't be disappointed.

Visited here with Bunkers Golf Society 28/06/2015.
Superb course with some of the best greens I've ever had the pleasure to putt on. True, slick and just perfect.

The course is a very interesting layout with no two holes coming close to looking the same. It requires accuracy and good club selection and if you combine the two then you stand a great chance of scoring heavily.

The course is kept beautifully and is a real pleasure to both play on, but also walk round. The bunkers and fairways were excellent and all tee boxes were flat and tended to well.

The facilities are also plentiful with everything you could need at your disposal. Driving range, large putting green, 80 yard pitching area, chipping green, and great changing area.

The value for money was good with a fair price for 18 holes and a bacon roll. The prices for a post round pint or two was also fine and the service and warm welcome from al the staff was good.

Definitely a course I would have no hesitation in recommending to any keen golfer. If you haven't visited Preston GC, get yourself booked in NOW!

A course that was very well maintained and very picturesque. A large verity of holes, from very short deceptive par 3s to long straight par 5s, deeps valley fairways, large changes in elevation and thoughtful doglegs with blind approaches. Every hole posing a different challenge and a different thought process. A very enjoyable round, good greens, good bunkers and well presented tee boxes. Very friendly staff and great facilities, with a driving range, a pitching area, chipping area and large putting green. I look forward to visiting again.

I have played Preston GC many times over the past few years and always look forward to playing there.

The course is built on undulating terrain, and is invariably presented in excellent condition, with fast, true greens.

There is an agreeable mix of long and short holes, with plenty of variety and changes in elevation to keep you interested.

I most recently played Preston in April 2015, and was amazed how well the course looked so early in the season.

Every credit to the greens staff,

A true bargain at £20 per round with County Card.

Preston is a charming golf course with plenty of character. I assumed Preston was a fairly flat area being so close to the Fylde coast yet this course is undulating to say the least.

There are some great holes on this course including a par three played from a (very) elevated tee.

Very strong finish to the course in particular 17th which is stunning.
The course can struggle a little during periods of heavy rain but in general is always in good condition.
The training facilities are very good and there seems to be a lot of focus on developing young talent which is great to see.

I always look forward to playing here and try to get there once per year.
A good course to visit as a society as they offer competitive options on golf/food.
