As tough as it gets

I have played at Royal Lytham many times over the past 10 years, and can say with some certainty that this is the hardest golf course I am ever likely to encounter.

Generally there is at least a stiffish breeze blowing, and that just exacerbates the level of difficulty. The key to a good score is keeping the ball in play, and out of the rough and bunkers. Easier said than done! In true links fashion, the bunkers both on the fairways and especially around the greens are sculpted to ensnare any balls in their vicinity, and many of the greenside bunkers are extremely deep, steep and penal.

The greens and fairways are always in first class condition, and the practice facilities are also excellent.

The front 9 plays mainly downwind, and the back 9 generally into the wind, finishing with 6 par 4s, most of which are a stern test. There aren't really any stand-out holes, but equally there aren't any weak ones either.

Overall, this is a great place to play golf, but set your scoring expectation level realistically!

Having played the championship course many times already this weekend I played the short course and what a fantastic facility it is. Fairly short in length but still quality and great for a practice round or if short on time.
The greens are a lot slower than the main track but still of a good standard.

Will definitely return to the short course in the future.

You get what you pay for with this little gem. It may cost you a small fortune to play but its well worth it. The course is every bit as nice as it looks on the TV. Fairways are amazing, greens are little snooker tables BUT its a tough track.

If your going through a bad patch in your golfing life then this isnt the course to reckindle your form. Even with a bad round you will come off thrilled you made the choice.

The facilities are as good as you will get anywhere in the world.

Have been fortunate enough to play this course a few times and have just done so again recently. Unbelievable quality and attention to detail makes it stand out. The clubhouse has so many lovely rooms and memorabilia you could spend hours just looking around the place.

Can't wait to go back.

Am lucky enough to get to play once a year here and it is always a pleasure. Walking the same fairways as all the top pros is a great experience and the course is always in top class condition. Front 9 is slightly easier and we had a head wind most of the way home.

Clubhouse has a great sense of history with photos/paintings of all the greats. Catering is always good too. The only thing that needs improving is the pro shop, could do with being a bit more welcoming!

Great venue with so much history and tradition. Very tough test of golf due to the length of the golf course and the fairway bunkers! I would 100% recommend this to anybody who has the chance to play here. Not much bad to say about an Open Championship venue!!
