Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a true championship links course, with first class facilities to match. The course is set amongst the dunes on the North West coastline and is another of course designer, James Braid’s great creations.
S&A (as it is widely and affectionately known), was founded in 1906, part of the great golf boom around the turn of the 20th century. Inevitably the passing of so many years has brought about changes to the course, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained.
The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain.
All the holes are of championship standard and no two are the same. However, if one had to be singled out it would, be the sixteenth. This famous hole has a great hill and bunkers, lined with railway sleepers and is a cunning trap, catching poor second shots. It is called ‘Gumbleys’, after the gentleman who spent some time in there!
The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze, profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide you with a challenging and immensely enjoyable experience.
The recently refurbished clubhouse also provides a splendid setting for unwinding after your round. The main lounge and patio to the front of the clubhouse provide stunning views across the course, including the 18th green and 1st tee.
Complemented with a warm welcome and excellent catering, everything is in place for you to enjoy a memorable day.

What a beautiful course that works it's way through the dunes beautifully. Sharing the same stretch of land as hillside, royal birkdale you can see it's in the right sort of company. Greens, fairways and bunkers are all perfectly tended to. The course provides a stern challenge for any golfer. Get onto it asap!

This is a very tough but fantastic golf course.

In pristine condition with carpet like fairways and beautiful pot bunkers littering the course, choosing the correct club is no easy task. If you do manage to keep it on the short stuff, beautiful, receptive, fast and true rolling greens await your approach shot.

Before my round here I used the practice facilities which were excellent, a grass driving range and practice bunkers and a putting green which mimicked the greens on the course perfectly.

I will certainly be visiting his course again.

Played here on a gorgeous summers day and it was tough.
Every hole is different and the courses natural defence, that pretty purple heather, is everywhere. If you miss the fairway then get a good line because it could be gone. That said, play within yourself and get your tee shot away on the short stiff and you are rewarded with great fairways and receptive greens that run fast and true. Luckily rain the previous day's slowed them a little but they were still quick.
It is well bunkered and the prevailing wind makes it play links like.
It's a tough course by anyone's standards but I loved it and can't wait to try it again.
The clubhouse is brilliant, traditional but classy, staff were attentive and friendly as were the members who passed the time of day with us.
A superb venue for anyone playing on England's Golf Coast...on the quiet I would rather play here again than Hoylake.

I would have to say that these are the best greens that I have ever had the pleasure to putt on. Along with that, the fairways and tees are always in perfect condition giving a true, hard, but fair test of golf.

Course was in fantastic condition with stunning definition from tee to green, fairways defined with heather. Greens were very very good.

It's a real tough track and can be a killer if your wayward off the tee, if you rate a course based on difficulty this would be a 10!

Good facilities, lovely clubhouse and you can understand why this place is over £100 a round, whether it's worth it is up to the individual

Exactly what you would expect from a golf course in this area with the history behind it. It was a joy to get the opportunity to play S&A. Built up as a monster it was surprisingly playable with rough that was tough but not impossible.

Every hole is a challenge with many blind shots towards distant (very distant in some cases) greens but reach the green and they are true and again on the playable side of tough.

Would welcome the opportunity to return but the cost is the only troubling factor (although it is similar to the many other great golf courses that surround it.

    Challenging links course

This is a high-quality championship links course which is a thorough test of your game from first shot to last.

Although literally next door to Hillside, there are some subtle differences - here you will find much more heather in play on the course, and also substantially more pot bunkers. Coupled to a number of blind shots as you pick your way through the dunes, this combines to present a fair but very enjoyable test of your golfing ability.

On my latest visit in September 2015, the course was in very good condition, although greens were a little on the slow side.

A worthy accompaniment to Southport's other fabulous courses.

Outstanding golf course with not a bad hole on it. Probably one of the tighter links off the tee I've played but it rewards good shots and is a thinkers golf course. Will definitely be back.......soon!!!

Visited as a guest of a member, so with the guest rate it is very reasonable price for what you get. It is early April and the greens were not the best, you can see they will be once they have the spring cut, they were quite fast and tricky with the undulations.
All the holes are great in their own right, occasionally you come across a stunning one, when you realise you are playing somewhere of standing.
It was real pleasure to be invited here and cannot wait to return.

A classic on the West coast

A classic on the West coast, another course that ticks all the boxes, it literally is just the other side of the fence to Hillside. The set up is great, the welcome good and the course rewarding of good straight hitting. The 1st is a tough opener, a long Par 3, but there is relief as there are shorter holes that add to the mix of holes here. Everyone enjoys hitting across the "Gumbleys" a real feature set of railway sleepers. The last hole finishes with the clubhouse sitting right behind the green.
