Set within 150 acres of stunning Cheshire countryside, Vale Royal Abbey Golf Course was officially opened in 1998 and has since matured to become one of the best courses in the North West.
All greens are constructed to USGA specifications with natural free-drainage, enabling the course to remain open and fully-playable all year-round, irrespective of the weather.
In addition, all tees remain in use throughout the year, eliminating the need for winter tees or mats. Plus the use of competition tees is also permitted year-round for general play – a superb advantage for those wishing to be challenged by the course at its longest.

You get an idea about a golf course as you drive towards it and first impressions last. So as you approach Vale Royal Golf Club through a lovely residential area and then pass through the gates to see the majestic Clubhouse to your right it is hard not to say "wow this is nice" out loud.

Our midweek visit with Bunkers Golf Society was our first experience of this Cheshire delight that competes locally with Sandiway and Delamere, two other brilliant courses. It offers superb practice areas with a long range (if you can be bothered collecting your own balls?) large pitching and chipping area with a green better than most and a putting green that reflected the pace of the greens perfectly. It was quick.

The clubhouse is the standout feature and despite its grand appearance it was welcoming and friendly. The staff were lovely and food was good.

The course is immaculate. Tee boxes are massive and well maintained. Take your own broken tees for the par 3's and iron tee shots because they must employ a little golfing gnome to clear up the usual tee box debris. The fairways were perfectly cut and nice and springy. Sensibly the rough is kept at a reasonable length were you can find your ball and still remain in the hole, a punishment but not killing your game. Bunkers are the main defence and there are a lot and they are very well placed. Experience of the course would undoubtedly help. There are a few blind shots but follow the markers and you will be fine. The fairways don't run out or turn unexpectedly.

Putting on this course is tough. The greens are big and have plenty of breaks and slopes. Getting the pace right early on is a must. They were very quick, true and firm and it could be difficult to get the ball to stop.

There are only three par 3's with one measuring nearly 200 yards so it is a stern test of golf. The short par 4's are deceptively tough. If you do take them on then all but perfect drives will be punished. Playing the course and what you see is the key on these shorter holes.

This is a beautifully presented golf course. Each hole sits within its own environment and each has its own character and challenge. There is nothing that can be said to fault Vale Royal Abbey and any golfer touring the North West of England would do well to seek out this lovely golfing venue.

On the drive into this place you know it could be quite good by the rather large houses you pass, all worth a pretty penny i'm sure!
Then you arrive at the course where the Abbey is the clubhouse! Not all of it but pretty spectacular none the less.
Facilities are decent with a nice sized pro shop, decent bar area and changing rooms. Outside a couple of nets or a small range to warm up on and an adequate putting green.
The course itselfs is very nice. Lots of trees and big american style bunkers to negotiate. Fairways in good nick and the greens true but no overly fast due to a recent sanding.
We really enjoyed the round and even got a little history lesson on the way round with a few facts to educate you on each hole.

Played here with bunkers golf society as part of one of our major competitions.
Having played here once before i was looking forward to it again, you get a sense of what course it is going to be as you drive in. The course played lovely again on this visit with the fairways lush and green. The club was having there club championship the same weekend as our visit so you can imagine it was in good condition, certainly by the pin positions as all of them were tucked away and on slopes were sometimes defensive putting was better then going for it as ball would run down a slope leaving a similar putt coming back. I really enjoyed this golf course and would play again as knowledge of holes is key if you want to score well.

I played here as part of the visit of Bunkers Golf Society.

The drive up through the grounds to the clubhouse leave you in no doubt you are at a quality venue with excellent practice facilities on display.

The course itself is nice and in superb condition with truly exceptional greens offering a smooth, true roll on every putt. They really are a pleasure to putt on.

The course layout consists of a lot of blind teeshots which isn't ideal for the first time visitor. Guesswork was required at times and seemingly good shots ended up being punished. The course is a little bit bland with no really memorable holes.

Despite this, the pristine conditions of the course meant it was still an enjoyable round of golf.

We were served Steak pie and chips after our round which was followed by apple pie and custard and both dishes were very nice.

Visited VRA as part of the bunkers society calendar on the 24th of July 2016.

    Venue:

    - Lovely location with a very nice looking clubhouse / building.

    - Golfers bar was a little small and decor a little outdated, but it is a shared venue used for weddings and hotel.

    - Bar prices a little steep.

    - Having said that, the staff were very polite and attentive and the food pre and post round was of a good standard.

    Practice facilities:

    - Better than some locations visited this year, and also conveniently located right next to the club house/main building and car park, which is far better than the long walk that some venues provide.

    - Practice facilities consisted of 2 driving nets, (maybe a 3rd and 4th net would be useful as there did seem to be a little wait for a free net).

    - Short game facilities were very good with several chipping areas and a short to medium grass range to hit a few shorts irons on.

    - Practice putting green (if a little small) was very representative of the actual course greens and not thread bear / patchy as some courses can be, which is very important.

    Course:

    - Fairways - Nice variation of tight holes in terms of length, well placed bunkers / other hazards that made you think about course management and not just hitting driver / short iron off every tee.

    - Greens - very quick and well ironed (despite taking rain the previous day). Pin position were very tough with the club holding its club championship the same weekend, which for a poor putter like myself meant a few tentative putts but still an enjoyable test.

In summary, very nice course and definitely one i would like to see on the bunkers calendar in future years.

Visited VRA as part of Bunkers Golf Society on 24th July 2016.

Our visit coincided with the their club championship and therefore the course was in its best condition with the greens having been cut daily and ironed to give a superb pace.

The clubhouse is very impressive as you arrive and is a lovely old building that sets the tone for the day. The decor inside and the general appearance within he building isn't up to that of the outside [and it is a bit dated and tired] but it was still pleasant.

The welcome was warm and our pre round bacon rolls and coffee were served in a private room by attentive staff.

The course was in superb condition and is a real test of golf. It isn't particularly long but is very tricky and rewards accuracy from the tee to give you any chance of scoring well. There are quite a few blind shots which can be punishing if you have never played the course before and in our group we suffered from this.

The fairways were manicured, soft and fluffy under foot and were lovely to play from. The rough had 2 cuts, with the deeper being extremely penal as the ball sat down and simply advancing to the shorter turf was the order of the day.
Bunkers were a little inconsistent with a few being fluffy and overstocked and some being a bit bare, but they were playable throughout.
The greens stole the show and were beautifully presented. They were fast, smooth and undulating and made for some low scoring.

Post round we enjoyed a lovely meal of home made steak pie, chips and veg and apple crumble and custard and its fair to say that this was one of the largest, and tastiest meals we've enjoyed at clubs this year. Again, this was served in a private room that allowed for our presentation and the staff were all warm and attentive.

The day cost us £55 with tee times at midday and on a Sunday in peak season I thought this was good value. I was really disappointed to note that the club were offering similar peak tee times the weeks before and after our visit for £25-£30 and although we enjoyed food, I do not think it was £30 worth of food! It is disappointing that we booked this venue 8 months in advance, and yet we are punished against people booking at the last minute via tee booking websites.

Played here last year as part of Bunkers Golf Society season 2015, it was that well enjoyed by the group it was selected as a 'Major' venue for the 2016 season. Even on the drive into the course you get a sense of grandeur and a feeling your going to enjoy a special course. Facilities are great as expected from a place like this with so much history, staff are welcoming and they serve a decent pint. I've not seen a pro shop the two times I've been here but I've not looked for it so there may be one you just need to ask. Great bacon sarnie on arrival and lovely steak/ale pie afterwards

The course itself is just immaculate, my favourite course in the North West. It offers a decent challenge without being too difficult for the average golfer like myself. The greens are quick, challenging and will make you think. Fairways precision cut with the rough being a test if you land astray of the fairways but not too long so that you frustratingly lose your ball like in others courses played recently. The final hole is a great finishing par 5 that can make or break you.

Really looking forward to the next game here and hoping its sooner rather than later.

This Course is one of the best I have played this year, approaching through the residential area you know you are in for a treat. The practice area is one of the best I have used. The tee ares are in good condition, but did find a few a little uneven. The greens where in good condition also, they where fast and took a bit of getting use too. The course has plenty of Bunkers, of which I found plenty, they where difficult to get out of for me, due to their only being a thin covering of sand and they where quite compacted just under the surface. For me the Bunkers require more depth of sand. The meal after our game was good and the staff where excellent. I hope this course is on our list next year as I cant wait to play it again. Hopefully with more sand in the Bunkers or better still avoid going in them. Excellent value for money. Thank you Vale Royal Abbey for a marvelous day out.

For my second visit to this venue I was expecting to enjoy it as much as I did this time last year and I was not disappointed.
The clubhouse is massive and still impressive to look at if not in need of a little sprucing up. The practice facilities are excellent with a large short game area, decent range, nets and perfect putting green all within sight of the first tee.
The course I find to be interesting with no up and down holes and yes playing a few times would help your score as driver is not always the best option.
The fairways are lush and relatively divot free and the rough is thick and tight so the ball invariably sat down making it the punishment that it should be.
The greens are fast, undulating and tough. You can seldom just hit the ball at the hole without thinking about a break and degreening happened once or twice in my group with downhill putts.
The mixture of holes I find to be enjoyable, with par 4's ranging from 300 to 440 yards. The par 3's are great and played tough due to difficult pins but come the end of the day our 4 ball had scooted round in 4 hours 20 and despite not brilliant scores it was a good day.
The staff in the clubhouse were friendly and looked after us well and I hope to return next year.

I had read a number of reviews prior to playing and expected to really enjoy and whilst the course is in very good condition with very slick greens the overall impression was that most of the holes are forgettable.

There are too many par 4's around or under the 300 yds and too many blind shots which is something that I struggle with.

It is definitely a course which you need to have played previously to understand where not to miss which can be said of many courses but with the amount of blind shots previous play is an advantage.

For me the course has only 5/6 holes which I can recall as being good and the rest are quite bland.

The clubhouse is a little worn and the pro shop had very little to offer, even the fridge had only a dozen or so warm drinks!

The food served was the highlight of the day, steak pie and chips followed by apple crumble and custard was excellent as was the polite and courteous staff.

In summary, nice and tidy parkland course, very good greens but not a course I would rush back for, although to be fair most reviews on this site seem a lot more positive so make your own mind up.

Played here with bunkersgolf society in july.

As you drive down the road to the clubhouse you can just tell there is a gem of a course waiting behind houses you go past. The clubhouse looks fantastic and almost has a feel like an old royal birkdale style.
The practice facilities were one of the best ive been on with a range to hit balls off grass along with two putting greens and a chipping area.
The course itself is a beauty and me and the rest of my group were found saying how havent we played here before. I found it a very challenging course with alot of blind shots that needed to be hit, course management is a must and if i was to play here again i would definitely couse a different approach! The greens were a pleasure to put on and the best i have putted on(and the fastest). I could go on and on, hopefully another visit for 2016

As the subject suggests, my experience of this course from the moment you turn into the road to drive up to the club house you get a sense of 'this is going to be good'. You are not let down from the moment you step into the clubhouse on arrival to the moment you walk off the 18th.

I came as part of the Bunkers Golf Society day on 23rd July. We had decent weather and the course looked spectacular no matter were your peepers took you. From the first tee you've a great challenge, tight fairways, bunkers in spots that make you think about each shot and club selection and there's only one way to describe the greens. Stellar! They are quick, tricky reads but invite you to have a good go at each putt.

Tough to choose a favourite hole as each one has its own character but the 18th is a great final lead in hole and the fact I creamed a drive right down the middle 300 yards leaves me with fond memories....shame about the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th shots though.

All in all, I'd never heard of Vale Royal Abbey prior to our visit but I can guarantee this will be a venue I will be revisiting time and time again with friends.

I visited on 23rd July with 14 friends from Bunkers Golf Society.
The impressive approach to the clubhouse was matched by the attractive and beautifully maintained clubhouse staffed by cheerful, courteous staff ready and happy to serve a range of delicious snacks or more substantial meals.
The pre-round practice facilities were amongst the best I have encountered anywhere in the land. In addition to the usual driving nets there was a superb putting green, a large chipping green with bunker and even a 3 hole short course with holes ranging from 100 to 200 yards in length.
The course itself was attractive, interesting and challenging in equal measure with excellent bunkering and numerous strategically placed water hazards. The greens were immaculate.
This is a course which you would certainly enjoy getting to know well and I feel sure that I will visit again.
Two real ales were available in the bar too which was an added bonus!

Played here in July 2015 and found what I would describe as a fairly typical new course with a somewhat American feel - large slopey greens, huge bunkers on many holes, plenty of water hazards, and a number of marker posts to follow.

As with most courses, previous knowledge would be a great advantage in terms of understanding where not to hit the ball!

Possibly a decent Society venue, but not a course which would favourably with its classy near neighbours Sandiway and Delamere Forest.
