Just 4 miles from the city centre, West Derby Golf Club enjoys a secluded location in a leafy suburb of Liverpool. At 6,275 yards, it is a mature parkland course with immaculate fairways and excellent greens. It is a challenging test of golf for low and high handicap players, alike. To score well you need to be straight and accurate.

The Clubhouse was not the newest of facilities, however it was welcoming, with a modest sized ‘Pro Shop’. The weather on the day we played was warm and dry, although some off fairway areas seemed to be very soft underfoot.
The Tees were in good condition, with around half having ‘Winter Tees’ and the rest using the normal yellow tees.
The fairways were in good condition (preferred lies) with ‘Run-on’ as good as can be expected for this time of the year. The tip with this course is, ‘Long is to stay on the fairways’ as all manner of trees, shrubs and hidden ponds line most of the fairways.
The lay-out of the course was good and ‘Easy to follow’, (there was not a current ‘Course Planner’ available). There was a good selection of hole lengths with challenging Par 5’s mixed with tricky Par 3’s. The ‘Par 3’ (12th) had a fountain and flowers alongside the green, making it an interesting signature hole.
The greens were in good condition for the time of the year, medium/fast speed and well drained, though difficult to predict.
I would definitely like to revisit in the summer months.
The Lunch and Dinner meals were excellent.

Played this course with the CSGS society .course was fairly fit. Greens much better on front 9 than the back 9 . Was a very enjoyable course to play as this was my first time here . I can see it playing it again in summer. Staff were excellent and so was the food. Decently a place to visit.

First time for our society, course was in average condition for time of year, greens were quite slow and unpredictable. Stayed on afterwards for a meal (hotpot) which I have to say was delicious, would I go again, yes, perhaps later in the year.

First society visit. Pleasantly surprised. Got all the usual stuff, well stocked pro shop, practice putting green etc. Big clubhouse, even had 2 snooker tables. The Masters was on so they had it on a couple of tv's but also hung a sheet and projected it on big screen.
The locals and staff were very friendly and welcoming. Couldn't do enough for you. Food was first class all day.
As for the course it is a typical parkland. Plenty of trees. A good mix of holes. Some tight some more open. It's a course where just keeping it straight and in play gets you points, especially the back 9. Shame I didn't. Ha.
Overall a very pleasant experience and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Well what can I say about this course other than FANTASTIC! The drainage problems that have plagued this course for years seem to be a thing of the past; all credit to the fantastic green staff.

The clubhouse, especially the restaurant, are without a doubt the best in the area. You will not be disappointed with the food, drink or indeed the warm welcome you'll receive. From the club management, bar staff and fellow members, this has to be the friendliest club I've been to.

The history of the club shines through and with the latest course improvements this is well worth a visit - you'll be glad you did.

Played the course today and found it to be a pretty standard for a parkland track situated in a built up area - good enough for a day out without being particularly memorable.

It would probably favour the mid to higher handicapper rather than the single figure golfer due to the number of short to medium par 4s and lack of demanding tee shots.

Greens were good and fairways were in decent shape although, as it is now autumn and windy, there were leaves everywhere! This made finding your ball quite difficult, even on the fairway, at times. Felt sorry for the greenkeeper who had the thankless task of trying to keep them under control!

I played this course as part of Cargill Golf Society visit.

The course is relatively short with several short par 4's and a small river that comes in to play on a few holes.
Tight, tree lined fairways require accuracy off the tee.
The greens were in good condition and the fairways were well kept.
Good value for £20 on a Sunday.

I played this course as part of Bunkers Golf Society visit.

The course is relatively short with several drivable par 4's but don't let this fool you, this is a difficult course that requires a lot of thought.
Tight, tree lined fairways require the correct club selection and a really accurate shot or you will be struggling. It really isn't a course where you can just whack away with the driver.
The greens were in good condition offering a true roll and the fairways were well kept.

I enjoyed my visit and would definitely return here to play.

I played this course on Friday 19/06/2015, with Bunkers golf society along with golfbreaks4u's drive to spain competition. The course is a fantastic parkland course, with tight mature treelined fairways so accurate tee shots are a must, the little stream runs throughout all the holes on the front 9 either in front of the green or tee boxes making you think about each shot. The back 9 opens up a little bit although every hole makes you think about your tee shot position or approach shot making it a tricky course even if it is only quite short.

The clubhouse and pro shop staff were welcoming and very accomadating. All in all a great course and one i will visit again.

Played here as part of bunkers golf society.

This is a nice little course that i think is worth anybody playing. Its a very well presented course were most times course management is the best option instead of pulling driver out most holes.
The fairways was one i was told might stay abit wet and boggy but there was no sign of this at all and it was in fantastic condition.
Good practice facilities and a good putting green all in all i look forward to visiting again

This is a really nice small local club in the heart of Liverpool which offers good value for money.

The facilities are good and the putting green and nets give ample opportunity for a warm up.

The course is nicely presented and it looks its best on holes with water hazards where Monet like bridges guide the way.

I loved the soft bouncy fairways although these are said to retain water after rain and I found the greens to roll really true albeit not overly fast.

The course protects itself with tree lined fairways. It is however, not overly tough and can be enjoyed by all standards of golfer. Some par 4's are short and driveable but course management is crucial on most holes rather than just thwacking driver.

I can't think of any standout holes but that's just a minor comment suggesting that all are pretty good and I would probably enjoy playing here again if given the chance.

I played here on Friday with my society , as we rolled up on arrival there was a good pratice area with putting greens an chipping to also it had nets to hit the longer irons an woods , the course itself was in good nick , the greens where very quick with abit of sand on them but well maintained , defo worth the money you pay to play here it's not the longest of courses lots of drivable par 4s there as been lots of work going on loads of GUR patches on most holes , would defo make a second visit worth the money you pay for sure

Played West Derby on 19th June as part of a Bunkers Golf Society visit.
Despite living 10 minutes from the course, I`m ashamed to say I`ve never visited - mainly because of people in the past warning me that the course plays heavy and wet for large swathes of the season. Lesson learnt - Don`t listen and believe everything you hear!

West Derby is a lovely set up with a welcoming club house that has a very quaint and picturesque feel to it. The course is tree lined and tight and requires accuracy from the tee to give you a chance to attack the greens. Anything wayward is punished and therefore its a great leveller for golfers of all handicaps.
A glance at the course planner would suggest you can go after this course and get a great score - which is partially true. But it`s risk/reward and any mis hit shots will quickly see the overall total on your card rise steeply.

The greens on the day were smooth and reasonably slick without being punishing. They had subtle undulations and generally played well apart from a couple that has a couple of marks on them as though damaged or recently repaired [but to be fair, they were more on the fringes]

The teeing areas and fairways were well tendered and cut nicely. Divots were not an issue and the course was in good condition. The bunkers were decent with only the odd one being a bit firm, but generally they played fine.

The course doesn`t have too many "stand out" holes, but the par 3 14th hole over a small pond to a well guarded green that was surrounded in beautifully blooming flowers was pleasing on the eye - and thats what the course generally does in buckets. Without being breathtaking, it is beautiful and is a true parkland track.

It certainly put to bed any rumours and words I had heard before - and although it was the start of the summer, we had seen typical UK summer weather in the days prior to our visit and rain had been plentiful. Despite this, the course played firm and fast and drainage was not an issue.

All the green staff and club staff were warm and welcoming and made an effort to speak with us and say hello in passing.

Definitely worthy of a visit and a very pleasant days golf at a warm and friendly course. I hope to be back in the future.

    Played here 1/3/15.
Course was in pretty good condition considering the reccent weather that we have had, think there was about 3 temp greens in play and a few temp tee boxes. The course was abit boggy in places but the course looks like it is doing everything it can to protect it with some forward tees/roped off areas which isnt a big problem.
The greens for the time of year were in great condition they were running quick and true and i dont recall at any point any of our group getting a untrue roll or a wierd bounce which is great for confidence at this time of year.
Really enjoyable round with alot of thinking holes, the course is quite tight and accuracy is key to a good round.
I would suggest getting a stroke saver as there are some tricky holes, it was our first time playing here so didnt have a clue, was a great touch that the lad in the pro shop realised this and kindly provided one for us, this was a great touch and great hospitality, little things like that are what makes people come back, great touch.
All in all a good course and very welcoming, will definitely be visiting again.
