The Wilmslow Golf Club enjoys the distinction of being the only course in Cheshire where it was once possible for European Tour professionals to earn Ryder Cup points. That was in the days when the club proudly hosted the Greater Manchester Open and the Martini International, two of the tournaments which heralded the arrival on the European scene of the great Spanish and German golfers.

In the late 70s and early 80s no fewer than six Ryder Cup captains of the future Tony Jacklin, Bernard Gallagher, Bernard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance, and Nick Faldo tried to master the 6,635 yard par 72 course. And nine members of the European team that won the Ryder Cup in 1985, for the first time in 27 years, had played in the Martini at Wilmslow in 1983.

In more recent times Wilmslow has been a regional qualifying course for The Open and has been the venue for many county championships and intercounty matches. Located only two miles from Wilmslow town centre and within 10 to 15 minutes of the motorway network, the parkland course has a figure of eight layout and embraces a meandering stream which is a feature of the opening hole and three par threes. The greens and fairways are in excellent condition throughout the year.

A somewhat over used phrase when describing a golf course is 'hidden gem', but in the case of Wilmslow Golf Club it certainly fits the bill. The Golf club is set in a wonderful Cheshire location just outside Wilmslow town centre. Upon arrival we were greeted in the pro shop by a very helpful and informative young man. The pro shop has an excellent range of golfing apparel and equipment, noticeably from all major brands. The first note of quality was the teeing areas, they were absolutely stunning and better than some of the greens I have experienced over the years. The 1st tee takes a grand position above the 9th and 18th greens and provides a lovely elevated start to the round. Bunkers play a huge part in the course defences, every hole had a series of well placed and immaculately maintained sand traps. All bunkers were being hand raked by the green staff, providing a great consistency in each, and I had plenty of experience in them! It is likely that the fairways will take on greater definition in the months ahead as the rough was very low and allowed wayward tee shots to go unpunished, although maybe not such a bad thing! The back nine is one of real quality, an excellent variety of holes with some great Par 3's to note. Holes 10,11 and 12 all require strategic placement off the tee to allow good access to the greens. The par 3 14th plays 180yds uphill surrounded by mature tree line, this hole is stunning. The finishing holes 15,16,17 are all a joy to play culminating with a great par 5 to finish. Following our round we enjoyed a warm welcome in the club house from a very friendly membership and had a pleasant lunch. The club house sits in an elevated position with great views of the Cheshire countryside. Complete with a driving range that includes covered bays and the latest Trackman technology, this golf club has excellent facilities. If you are planning for a day of golf then head over to Wilmslow, you wont be disappointed.

Twelve of us visited Wilmslow today for the third year in row you are made to feel very welcome from the moment you arrive by all the staff and members.

The course is a fair test of golf always very well presented and in great condition, some challenging holes, you have to think your way round greens can be difficult to read.

After our game we dined in the clubhouse which was high quality hosted by Simon, Karen and their team.

Would recommend to any golfer you should play here we have booked again for next year.

Thanks to all at Wilmslow Golf Club.

Went here with friends from the club on a very warm day. Course was in beautiful condition and you could putt on the tees!
It's a thinking man's golf course, you do need to think about where you place the ball off the tee. Some holes meander through the trees making it difficult to know where to place your shot. The same applies to approaches, if you aim right at the flag you may be bemused as to where your shot finishes up.
It's mostly easy walking but there are a couple of steep hills so if your mobility isn't so good you might want to hire a buggy.
The clubhouse is very well appointed, and there are good views of the course, but the stairs can seem a little steep after a round.
A very good test and well worth a visit. Not long but not easy either.

Great parkland golf course which punishes you if you are not on your game! The course is a par 72 and well played golf shots are rewarded which is always a sign of a great golf course. A blend of par 5's where you can pick up shots and challenging par 3's and par 4's makes it an exciting challenge for any standard golfer.

Nice traditional clubhouse with friendly staff. Only slight criticism could be that the depth of sand in bunkers can be inconsistent at times. However, overall, outstanding course, great greens with good practice facilities. A course I would definitely recommend.
